what bit do you use for showjumping and why?

Just a normal french link snaffle. He gets strong in this bit but I can still just about control him

Other has a gag which I hate *shudders* So am trying a full cheek snaffle with peanut link today see how it goes

atm my novice jumps in a sweet iron loose ring eggbutt snaffle but at 17.2 he will doubtless require a bit more as we go up through the ranks, he is alot of horse to holddd

a pelham... otherwise i lean forwards because he is pulling so hard, i drop him in the bottom of the fence, he stops and i fall off... lol

not always but hes very strong!

I should have said I have only taken her xc jumping once, and she was fine, but we will see how she goes in that bit. I might have to re think her bit when she knows what we are doing
wink.gif
I wouldn't say she was strong, just gets a bit OTT and needs reminding now and again that she has a passenger lol

I have a 3 ring gag with a lozenge - it's a copper one. My mare tends to rush into fences so I need it for brakes!! I ride her in it all the time due to her having a tendancy to be strong hacking as well, I ride with it on the bottom hole.

Vulcanite pelham and a running martingale just in case for one of them a 14 year old grade A I started in a snaffle and tried various other bits but i've found he goes best in the pelham and we don't fight each other for control, at home he's in a snaffle and draw reins

. My 16yr old pony (left in my sig) goes in a 3 ring gag just cos he always has, he also has a running martingale but again just in case really i'd rather have it there and not use it than wish i'd had it when its too late

She's very strong coming into fences and needs to be half halted, bit of a speed merchant!, happily speeds towards fence whatever height. Allows me to have a lot more control. Have gag on second ring though, not bottom ring.

Grumps - double jointed training snaffle
Trapez - single joint eggbut snaffle
Grace - Myler comfort with hooks or silicone/nylon string bit depending on level of jumps
Mabel- Balding gag
Melly - Myler comfort snaffle
Holly - Myler with hooks

one wears a dr.bristol, flash and running martingale.

the others wear french link snaffles and a plain noseband.

can you see which one i bought as an adult horse and which i bought as youngsters???
i have never yet had to put anything but a plain snaffle on anything i have broken and brought on myself as they are taught from day one to listen to what i ask them.

My horse is ridden in a single jointed wilkie because he thinks he knows best, but it gives me the little bit more control I need, a grackle noseband because he likes to cross his jaw and ignore me and running martingale because he has his head so high otherwise he can hardly see the jumps.

This is working at the moment but in a couple of weeks I'lll probably have to change it again

Jenny is in a myler low ported kimblewick. She is quite sharp to jump and I don't have enough control in a snaffle and she objects most strongly to anything with a poll action and a sliding mouthpiece such as a gag, a pelham is too strong....and so the kimblewick was the ideal choice. Love this bit - its just incredibly hard to get hold of in bigger sizes in this country.

5 year old in a plastic happy mouth loose ring jointed snaffle martingale and flash, 6 year old in full cheek snaffle with cooper roller and flash and breastplate

french link snaffle - doesnt need anything stronger - i prefer to have him forward and me pulling than him going backwards with me kicking
laugh.gif

he also has a martingale and flash but tbh hedoesnt really need the flash cos its not on very tight

I use the same bit and gadgets for everything, a happy mouth snaffle. Used to use a single jointed loose ring snaffle but have just swapped to a straight bar loose ring snaffle snaffle. Also she wears a martingale.

Genie's in a jointed fulmer snaffle for jumping as our turns aren't always so good! She has a martingale attached to a breastplate as well, but my instructor said to me today to take the martingale off when I jump her, but for my sharer to leave it on.

ETA she also has a flash noseband

Loose ring happy mouth with peanut.

no noseband

Why? Because he'll go like a rocket regardless. Bitting him up just means I hurt him trying to slow down, it is still totally ineffective.

Watching us jump is EXCITING LOL

Waterford snaffle at home and loose cavesson at home, neue schule universal and grackle usually away from home. Mainly different as I hack to local SJ venue, which involves bridge/roads so need bitting to keep control there, and near impossible to change when I get there!!!

At the moment I've been riding him in a Pee Wee bit but he's so speedy that I think we might need more brakes soon if we plan on doing anything bigger than 2ft xD & a martingale, even though I hate running martingales... bleh
Or maybe I'll just dig out my kineton noseband & a snaffle like I would for XC and try that thinking about it! :P
