I have a big 17hh WB. I have lessons weekly. She is so heavy in my hands even after lots of schooling and transition work.

I've tried many bits including mylers, Dutch gag, kk, jointed snaffle, hanging cheek and I now have her in a copper roller full cheek but still so heavy.

Also out havpcking I would like some extra breaks without using a Pelham etc.

Any ideas?

I would not use a hanging cheek tbh - it only encourages them to lean more.

You could try a Nueu Schule Verbinden, lifts them through the shoulder and helps with the leaning.

a think french link snaffle.. if she leans, 'drop her' but let ya reins go.. usually works after three or four times..

Loux

I'd agree with this, but also add to the mix a loose ring, it makes it much harder to get a proper 'hold' as the ring keeps moving, I also have the same problem as you and I use a similar combination although I also have a copper mix in the bit too :D Has done wonders for my mare and for my arms :D

Is hanging cheek a good option or just a loose ring?

She's a hard horse to ride and not easy to work in an outline, shes very kn the forehand and likes to go round like a donkey lol.

She does get better the more transitions and bending we do though

I like my mare in a hanging cheek waterford - It is a multiple link mouth piece so is harder to get hold of !

the waterford worked wonders for my horse who used to lean really badly, i was so impressed by it! just remember if you go for it, to get a size 1/4 of an inch to 1/2 an inch bigger than you usually would.

a waterford bit collapses when they leans, i got one for my heavy headed part bred arab show pony, it fell in her mouth, scared her, and she never leaned and i never had to use it again! be careful though, they can be very servere if used incorrectly!

or a jointed pelham, french link or maybe a lozenge if you can find one :)

I use the loose ring Waterford for my horse who leaned a lot. My Trainer advised it and its the best thing I ever did. I hack out in it too, he's no longer heavy in the hand, I dont consider it a harsh bit atall. If anything its a kind one in my case as my horse is quieter to ride, we have no more battles, he actually seems to like it more than any other bit.
