What bit do people think is stronger a pelham or cheltenham gag?
I normaly use a pelham for hunting my cob, but he's just getting so strong it becoming difficult to pull him up. So i went and brought a cheltenham gag i use it all the time and its stopping him, but will it stop him when i go hunting wednesday.
I that dont work the only other thing is a double, but he's never wore one and dont really want to go down that road.
Ideas anyone

No bit will stop him more than temporarily.

A gag is the least bit I'd put in a horses mouth, I really dislike their effect.
I would work on my riding and putting a good stop on him and I frankly would avoid any situation where a snafflebit wouldn't be enough.

If that's not how you work, just put a really long shanked bit and get it over with. But the isk is that the pain from a more severe bit will just keep him running faster.

It isn't a case of which is stronger, they have totally different actions and are incomparable. what does your cob do when he gets strong? you need to understand the bits and your horse's way of going to decide on the appropriate bit. And don't discount a double, they can be very useful and many horses respond very well to them.

Realized I was pretty harsh, I'm sorry.

A perhaps more helpful advice; use the pelham with double reins. Ride the snaffle rein, use the curb rein as an emergency break.

I doubt a gag will work. Even if a harsher bit may help for the minute, it won't be long untill the horse gets numb to it.

Work the stop by asking for a stop with seat and voice - wait a few seconds to let the horse react - stop with the hand, softly and of course only if the horse didn't stop for seat and voice. Repeat with every stop forever. After the horse learnt, only seat will be needed.
