A horse i ride at work is becoming extremely strong - ok so hes a 18.3hh 5 year old fully fit n stabled so he wont be a little mouse, but hes a gentle giant whos unfortunatly been used as a hireling at work..... and by big novice men whos been pulling his mouth taking advatage of his sweet nature

hes gone from a snaffle - 3 ring - engluch gag - pelham in a few months and recently been very unhappy in his mouth - who would have guessed that!

so after a few weeks off, and getting him going nicely in the school ive pursauded YO to sell him when hes right .... hes too nice to be a hireling.

currenlty in the school little 5'3 me can get him working well in a d ring snaffle ive hacked him today (in walk) in that n a market harbrough. he dosnt seem to like poll presuure much, but there is no way anyone could hold him in a snaffle jumping/hunting etc.

he has a fat tongue so needs a small mouth piece.

I really wanna get this boy right so i can find him a nice home where he can have people with soft hands riding him.

HELP!!!

what bit can i jump/hack etc in. with him being so big as soon as he lifts his head and he thinks hes off..... most peopel cant stop him.

any suggestions?

Ok this might be way off the mark but i have a forward 18hh ISH so have a little experience in this. I have been taught to use my body weight to slow him down it takes a little schooling but my lad goes when i come out of the saddle and when i sit deep and grip with my legs he slows down and collects that way i don’t need to use strength. I don’t believe any bit is going to stop him if he wants to go so i would go for re-schooling.

I must add that my lad is not at all strong on the flat but does like to rush at jumps and although he is in a continental snaffle on the 2nd ring i find that my body weight works better that the bit.

I'd love to see a photo of him too. He must be magnificent.

What about a cambridge mouthpiece on the bit, that's the one the "magic bit" has, but you can find it on other bits too.

Maybe going back to basics in a soft snaffle might be what he's needing and being ridden by someone with kind hands. We have had great results doing this (admittedly with a fat tounged 14.1 prone to oafish behaviour rather than the giant you have) having gone down the stronger bit/market harborough route first. Oh and with a drop noseband, which he was happier with than the flash. ETA we now have him going sweetly in a NS starter snaffle with the tranz angle lozenge, which I would never have expected to happen in a million years.
