what bit to use?

Ditto ^^ Have you tried a softer bit/bitless ?? Some horses go better in them than stronger ones. (I mean try it in a field etc. not on a hunt first!! LOL)

when i tried a soft bit he took off wiv me lol am in the process of tryin a dutch 4 ring gag so will see how that goes.

My horse used to be really strong, so i went from a pelham to an american gag. Then realised it was the way i rode him. He now hunts in a full cheek snaffle.

My (late, great) father, as did most of his generation, always used to say that if it won't be stopped in a Snaffle, use a Double Bridle. Or try a "proper" gag - a Cheltenham, not these c*** Continental ones. Use a double rein and ride off the Snaffle Rein and if necessay, take a serious pull on the Gag Rein. Otherwise, what about a Pelham of some description, always with a Double Rein or even a Kimblewick (very under-rated these days). Try lots - you will, eventually, find something with which you are both happy bunnies. Whatever, as long as you and Ned have a happy, pleasant day out without having a war re: the braking system. I'm a big fan of kimblewicks. My little mare used to hunt beaufully in one.

I hunt in a loose ring pelham with double reins, as you can use the curb rein when struggling and just the snaffle rein when they are hacking along.

I always think its kinder to use a stronger but bit less harshly, than to be pulling their back teeth out in a snaffle all day.
