i'm about to start riding my highland pony regularly again and i dont know what bit to put on her.

i used to ride her in a pelham and had super breaks and control in it (she doesnt like hacking out alone and would turn and tank off home) ive ridden her a couple of times recently and she's just had a full cheek snaffle in, which has been ok but i'm really having to pull to stop her which i really dont like doing. i feel im really yanking her mouth to stop her.

should i put her back in the pelham??

yup sounds like the best plan to me if she went well in it, and will save her back teeth some ache!

I have to say that as your horse was happy in the pelham why go back to a fulmer snaffle?my horse was originally in a loose ring snaffle but would basically set his neck and disappear with the rider. After my instructor got on him and he did the same to her she agreed that I needed to change the bit.I went to a happy mouth 3 ring but also added a flash and a martingale as the instructor felt he needed them. My horse would fling his head a fair bit in the flash and 3 ring bit but I did at least have brakes. After he chomped through the bit I decided to try something different and went to a cambridge mouth kimblewick. He is the best he has ever been.I have good brakes, steering is now ok although initially I had to do a fair bit of schooling to work on getting him to turn off of my seat and best of all he no longer needs the flash noseband and is not headflinging or chomping down hard on the bit in frustration. I think some horses just go better in a straight mouth bit and a pelham is a good bit used with 2 reins for some horses. I like the kimblewick as it is used off of a single rein instead.
