what boots do you travel your horse in

I have some quite nice travel boots, but to be honest, most people I know don't travel their horses in boots - or just normal brushing boots.

They seem to be perfectly fine without - so I'd say if your horse has problems with them then just don't put them on!

I currently travel my horse in overreach boots and brushing boots all round. He's a very quiet traveller but a bad loader and adding travel boots just makes the whole situation worse.

My mare only travels with front travel boots, she goes mad, kicking out and all sorts if I put rear travel boots on! Felt bad to start with but she's happier without her back boots:)

I have the Andrew Hoy NEW ones, which are really good. If your horse hates them then I wouldn't bother, but I put mine on cos having had horses involved in road accidents I really believe the boots helped protect their legs from other hooves striking into them. Obviously they wouldn't have prevented a very serious injury though!

(the trailer flipped over, luckily horses were ok, but I can imagine legs were everywhere inside the trailer!)

I've had problems with travel boots slipping down. I've got some Mark Todd ones and they are the best I've had by a mile. They don't seem to move, but the horse walks in them quite happily. However, I'm also happy to use gamgee and stable bandages over normal boots. I just like that extra bit of protection, even if most of the benefit is in my head!

my horse tends to step on them and freak out.

For this reason and the fact that they never fit well enough, i would never travel a horse in travel boots.

Bandages (properly done) are much safer. However I'd rather travel in nothing or brushing/over reach boots than travel boots.

I usually travel Giles in traveling boots. They're Derby House ones, but appear identical in every way apart from the logo to the Mark Todd ones. They sit really well on him (though he does the funny walk when first moving off) and I've never had any slippage.

When we first picked him up though, we had a long journey and he'd never worn boots before, so we left him naked-same as he came over from Ireland.

And recently I had a long journey to do to get to my trainer and it was incredibly hot so I left him naked. He seemed much happier that way :)

Interesting thread -

My horse bolts when I try load him
This week we have loaded him every night before we put him away for the night and we just popped his headcollar on and he has been going in first time every time with no boots

I have noticed when I am putting boots on he lifts his legs to stop you so I an not bothering now

Just to add - we had his loading sorted but a badly fitting saddle made him associate travelling with pain as he knew he would get ridden but the boots weren't helping either

Thanks OP for this thread as I was going to ask if it's ok to travel him in no boots as he is a good traveller :D

i just wanted to find out what others did...i've been to a few competitions (with out my horse) trying to see what everyone else traveled in & most had travel boots on! So i thought i'd just check with forum users!! i should have just posted to start with lol thanks for all you comments

One in none other in amigo ones but have seen better boots put on and take off in trailer, where can I buy just a front set of travelling boots?

Kal has only ever travelled in either bandages (gamgee underneath) or brushing and overreach boots all round. When we move yards at the end of this month, I will simply put him in brushing boots - he's not going far and he'll have the boots on anyway b/c he'll come straight in from the field onto the lorry.

There is a horse at our yard (a mahooosive chestnut mare, go figure!) who can't stand ANYthing on her legs so travels (and she travels a fair bit out at competitions) naked.

I have Mark Todd boots that came with Dol 6 years ago and have taken some abuse over the years....they are amazing! Otherwise use bandages & wraps....purely to keep white legs white. The racehorses wear nothing going to the races unless we have white legs in which case they get bandaged to keep clean!

Bandages, gamgee, over reach boots and hock boots for mine.

used to have travel boots but after one bad journey where they slipped under her feet which ment she couldn't get a grip will not use them again. To be honest i actually can't find any that actually fit correctly so after the bad experience I went back to the "old fashioned method"

Over reach on front and back, knee boots, hock boots and bandages with bandage pads under. my boy used to always rip travel boots by standing on them but i wouldnt put just bandages on if i were you as it doesnt protect the knee hock or hoof which are the main areas that need protecting

We used to use Amigo ones on our mare but she was completely traumatised by them and she travelled a lot better with brush boots and overreach boots
