What breed is this dog?

Hi all,

Having a debate with my sister in law - this is her 13 year old dog Jack. She reckons he is a full Jack Russell. I'm not so sure.

He's 38cm tall at the shoulder, with a narrow head and very long snout. His legs are straight and has a very narrow back end.

All other JRTs I have seen are smaller, more compact, and have completely different heads to Jack. His tail (partially docked) is straight, not curly.

Any ideas?
 
A Jack russel is a type, not a breed. A parsons russel has a breed spec and are deemed to be a breed. A JRT is a terrier, normally black and white, or brown and white, or black brown and white, or black and tan. They tend to be short legged, but can be long legged, and can come in a variety of sizes, with a variety of coat types, and some have straight tails, some have curly. So its perfectly likely that he is a JRT.

Yes; I was told that this is why the JRT isn't allowed at CRufts? Someone correct me if I am wrong though.
 
I've never heard of a JRT being a type rather than a breed. But yes, they're not recognised by the KC and not recognised at Crufts. But the same can be said for lots of other types of dogs, for example my dog a Patterdale Terrier (not to be confused with a Lakeland)
 
As others have said Jack Russells are a type not a breed. He's very similar to one we had, his littermate was tiny in comparison but in reality probably a normal size Jack, our's was just rather large but everything about him was Jack like. Our vet used to tease me about him and what we fed him on though he was never fat. Here's a picture of him at a similar age to your sister's dog, his head and muzzle where much more brown when he was younger. Please excuse the tennis ball on his head OH was playing with him.
