What Breed?!!.....Native Pony Type

Ok..so, got given this little pony a few months back. I assumed she was an Exmoor as she was soooo hairy and looked quite chunky in her woolies. I had her passported and the vet put Exmoor BUT she definitely isn't full Exmoor and I just wondered if anyone had an idea of what else could be in there.
Now, she came with a shetland who she has been with for at least the last 3 yrs. (pony is 4).
The shetland in winter looked like this:

She was chestnut with a light muzzle, belly and around the flanks..

Other pony looked like this:

and also had the lighter muzzle, belly and flanks (not overly obvious in photos)

As she has shed her coat she is going a lovely colour but its not a typical bay. Its almost Dun and am waiting for the remainder to come out to see whether there is a dorsal stripe there...although her face is more bay than her body

She also has the daintiest legs..real matchsticks..

Also, the shettie is going a silvery colour where she was pale in the winter..but bright ginger everywhere else

Do you think they could be related? They have a similar facial bone structure but pony doesn't look shettie like at all!!!

Pony is approx 11hh..

Sorry...a bit long but does anyone have any ideas?

I thought the mealy muzzle was unique to Exmoors? Could she just be a small one? Without the fur she doesn't look very Shetlandish to me. Very pretty pony though! Maybe she is still growing...

Possibly an off the moor Dartmoor? Theres alot of variation within them due to years of poor breeding. The propper dartmoors come from studs now unfortuantly. She's deffinatly not a full exmoor, thier breed standard is too definate but the meanly mussle is thiers. I'd say mostly exmoor with a splash of something.

Our old pure bred Exmoor was 11.2. He was also a bay/dun colour in summer.

She looks to be an exmoor, but more of the type you see on the moors rather than one from the studs

Looks Exmoor to me. Have a look on the Exmoor pony site and you will see some of a very similar colouring. Some are a brighter bay but some are more your pony's colouring. This is one like yours but have a look through the gallery!

I know someone with an Exmoor who is a dun colour. I presume he is pedigree as she showed him at Devon County.

Thats why I assumed she was Exmoor but I think they're quite chunky and she's very definitely not under all the hair.. Also the shettie has a mealy muzzle too.
I was wondering if they maybe shared a parent..

I agree she doesn't look to have any shetland in her its just that its a conincidence that they both have the mealy muzzle, belly and flanks and are both now going an odd colour. Pics don't pic it up so much but the shettie is really silvery on her thighs, belly and forlegs..

Looking at the links Ican't find any that look like her...they all look much chunkier. She's really quite petite with quite a horsey head..

I think I'll just stick with Exmoor x.. (anyones guess)..lol

How about Quantock? They put some arab stallions on the Quantocks years ago and some of those ponies can have quite spindly legs! She definitely looks the colour of the traditional quantock ponies though. I will try and find you some pics!

She looks a bit like my mum's pony! And I also always guessed exmoor x as she also had very spindly fine little legs.

The pony could be Exmoor or Dartmoor, purebred Exmoors who are inspected are branded. A lot of Dartmoors have light coloured muzzles. She has certainly not got splindy legs and appears to have enough bone for either.

Magicgirl...she really does have spindly legs. Much finer than my Welsh A for instance.. will try find a better picture..

She's certainally got some exmoor in there.

YO has a little mare who stands at 10.2hh and has the spindly legs, and looks very much like a dartmoor cross. I would say your pony maybe has dartmoor in it somewhere.

There were shetlands grazing with dartmoors.I think my shetland is a shetland x dartmoor with the emphasis on shetland so could be a bit of a mixture

The bay is deffo mostly Exmoor. Mine isn't full as she is too tall at 13.1 and has an 'illegal' white star. Exmoors range in colour from almost a black bay, right through the browns to dun. You would also be suprised at how fine purebred Exmoors legs are. She could be full......

Either way she's lovely, but I'm very biased about Exies!

I don't know about the bay/brown but the shetland isn't a full shettie, it's too big - they could be related but not in the shetland way!
