This just came up on my FB as a friend had liked it. I have no idea who the man is btw!

I'm used to big breeds of dogs but he (I assume) is a giant, beautiful too. So what is he?

I would like to know to!

there is one that waits at the station for his 'Daddy' with his mummy he is adorable! as soon as he turns up he throws himself on the floor!! :)

I'm not too sure that that's a genuine pic. I'll accept that the dog exists, obviously, but I strongly suspect that the picture's been photoshopped. The animal is completely out of proportion to the man, and to the sofa. Careful inspection of the guy sitting there, will reveal that his legs are also out of proportion. Not a 'fish-eye' lens, because there would be further distortion, but it somehow doesn't look right. Are there any clever photography bods about?

It's a very large dog, I agree, but I don't think that any dog has ever been as large as that animal appears to be.

Alec.

This came up a couple of weeks ago on a rare and extinct breed fb group that I am on, there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on there from all over the world and the general consensus was this is a photoshopped picture.

Hmmm I'm not convinced it's photoshopped but my OH is!
Tbh any dog that can fit my head in its mouth had to have lion in there somewhere!!
I was thinking along the Caucasian Shepherd breed but it hasn't got floppy ears?

Well I've been on google images and typed in Giant malamutes. He is definately real, some of these dogs enormous. Thankfully they seem to have a very loveable, docile nature. As to the ethics and health issues, I wouldn't like to comment!

I have a malamute that big in my house now, they definately do come that big lol, this lad I have is well over weight but even so he stands ridiculously tall.

God knows but you would need to take a bin bag when you take it for walks! Fancy walking home swinging that mumma!

We must think along the same lines ............ that's the first thought that came into my head. That and the feed bills!

Zero there's plenty of them being dumped in rescues at the moment, I am getting my 2nd rescue mal on sunday but if had the space could easily have taken another 10 I absolutely love the breed.

They are beautiful dogs. I always imagined them to be Siberian husky size. A while ago I browsed on the Battersea website and the majority of breeds were the Huskies and Staffies. Sad as they are both wonderful breeds but 'fashionable' for the wrong reasons.

Sibes are (or at least should be) surprisingly small dogs, mals are twice the weight, it's like the difference between a thoroughbred and a cob. The latter should still be athletic and capable of work, of course, and definitely never woolly coated!

That is quite a big difference between the breeds.
My Beardie is about 23" in height but I suppose because the siberians have a much more upright stature they appear to be much taller.

Sibe bitches may be as small as 20" and 16kgs, some of the racing bred ones are like little furry bags of wire coathangers, all sinew and craziness. :p Unfortunately fashion and popularity has led to the increase in oversized, fat and plush dogs.

Neither of the dogs pictured would be much use for their original purpose. One of the criticisms given by the representative from the International Federation of Sleddog Sports who attended this year's national dryland championships was that the UK's malamutes are still too slow and fat. :o

I wonder if it's been photoshopped, there are so many dodgy photos online at the moment! But my guess would be something like an Alaskan Malamute crossed with something as the coat is so long. Gorgeous looking dog though!

Loco sends :-P to you lol she said she's neither slow or fat, her sister is 1/3 of the fastest mixed team in the country ;-)

I think in the same way as horses show dogs are generally overweight and not fit for purpose. Most successful show hunters wouldnt cope well with a full days hard hunting and many show dogs although active happy dogs wouldn't cope with the work the breed was intended to do but the kennel club will continue to try to get the breed standard to their liking not to a useful working dog so their will be many dogs coming through that arent working lines but their owners may take it up as a sport.

I have a malamute and hes so hairy and fluffy he looks bigger when his coat is fuller - the vet thought he was overweight when he first met him but as soon as he put his hands on him he realised it was mostly fluff :D They do breed them this big in America and call them Giant Malamutes. Im 5'3 and he stands with paws on my shoulder and looks me in the face lol
