I think a lot depends on the country you are hunting over.....

I hunt with a pack on the welsh/shrops borders and ride 15hh cobby types who are ideal for out trappy hill country - one is a full Irish cob and the other is connemara x t/bred. Our jumps are usually under 3ft and mainly rails - very rarely do we need to jump hedges or gates. Also a large horse may struggle in the heavily wooded areas.

However if I was hunting on flatter, more galloping type country, I am sure my cobs would be quickly left behind and struggle with the fences, so would need a more blood type.

as Sidney says, it depends on the country... we hunt moorland, forestry and grassland and most people ride a halfbred or cob. The one or two TBs who hunt with us are not the sort to have come off the racetrack.

I have a 16hh CobXTB and the only thing you can fault her on is a lack of brakes :D

Has the benefits of a well built, strong horse, massive jump & fantastic stamina. Wouldn't want anything else to hunt. :D

As oithers have said, depends a bit on the country but in MOST hunt countries, I'd hunt an Irish Draught! For the Wynnstay and a couple of the other fast, big jumping countries I'd want an IDxTB!

I hunt a 16 2 sports horse,who we believe is id x tb.
She is fab in our country, and has the stamina and can jump....however,there are some times when i find 16 2 too big to go in the wooded areas, and its then i much prefere my 15 1 connie x.
I think its horses for courses really.

My 15hh cob is a hunting machine!! He absolutely loves it and will go all day BUT over the flat he cannot keep up with the pack. He's not bothered and we catch up eventually but he comes into his own if we're going over rough ground or covered areas! I've left the bigger horses standing in woodland, he's more sure footed and smaller so we can duck under things easily.

Personally while I love a good gallop I also like to know I've got a speed limiter and that he can go from flat to rough ground easily without worrying about his legs!!

Bless his heart he sets off with the pack like a pocket rocket but within minutes we're always overtaken!! Lol!!

Little cob goes wheeeeeee...I'm off...

My NH type 16.3 TB henry would have hunted quite happily in most country.

He was from Leicestershire, so was built for Quorn/Atherstone country. He also managed in my local packs where the country was more "trappy"; he showed up other horses who were only used to Quorn type country.

He was sure footed, and would adapt to any sort of ground he was running on. He would go through woodland quite happily, although you did have to duck!
