what can I do about flies?

I've never seen so many horse flies, 2 of our girls have fly masks on but there are as many flies underneath it as on top. Field is very close to the river so you can imagine. What is the most effective fly spray and what can I use around their eyes where they are getting horribly attacked?
 
I'm on the second week of trialling Tri-Tec on my horses , so far with brilliant success. Google it and read other users reviews. Only bought it as I couldn't get hold of Coopers which I splash out on annually during the worst of the fly period but tbh I'm a convert to this now I reckon.
 
Just spray it on your hand and wipe on, or use a flannel or towel. It does work. I've also had good success with Red Horse Red Zone balm on the face and ears, it's a gel-like formulation so you can just work it on with your hands.
 
Ive had good success with Power Phaser. Its not a miracle worker but it does work. I am sadly having to put a fly rug on him, full neck and mask during the day and he gets anything on show sponged with power phaser. He is hot but he is dark bay and thin skinned so they are eating him alive! :mad:

Riding out I do late late evening and cover him in the stuff which really helps. ;)
 
^ I second the Power Phaser, I only bought it recently and have noticed a big difference compared to other fly sprays (we have every NAF one in the cupboard and many more :D !) There will still be the determined flies, but there are a lot less than without the PP. My mare has a Cashel fly mask which is very effective, and is covered in a fly rug - I'd love her to be out naked but it's just horrible for them - we have quite a few pools etc near us so lots of mozzies / midges too.

The horse flies around us just laugh at the NAF sprays :mad:
 
Considering this seems to have been the worst year for many for flies (and particularly horse flies) I've had no issues with my gelding at all, he lives out 24/7, I use this:

and he gets Alltech Lifeforce in his feed. His field mate also has the fly spray and otherwise the same diet, but not the alltech lifeforce, and she has to wear a mask, my boy has no fly rug/mask etc. and i think i've only seen i lump from a fly bite since the warm weather kicked in. All the other horses at the yard are in fly rugs and are getting the NAF spray - they're getting eaten alive!
 
Cheers guys, I found a single bottle of power phaser on the shelf at countrywide the other day. It works brilliantly but it only lasts for 7 hours as per the bottle and 1 spray bottle did my 5 twice. So I'm slightly further forward but could do with something that works this well but lasts a lot longer.
