I currently have my parents in law springer bitch staying for 2 weeks while they are away. She is very sweet, but she is a mad springer!!
I'm adding a bit of training, lots of walks and more discipline than she is used to. She is learning very fast about most things, and I'm thrilled with her progress. (I'm not yet converted to a springer mind!)
However, I'm also learning that she is nervous aggressive to other dogs. Aggressive if meeting on a lead, and so nervous she runs a mile in the wrong direction if off lead.
So, what do I do?
 
Is she food orientated? One of my dogs lunges at other dogs while on lead (she's not allowed off lead) but it's from exuberance. I get her attention and make her sit and eat treats while other dogs pass (and hope the owners are smart enough to not let their dogs annoy her) and she's getting to a point now that I can walk her without treats. She also wears a headcollar so that if I need a back up, I have it.
 
One of mine is very dog aggressive, but stick a ball in his gob and he mostly ignores other dogs, even small white fluffy ones that run up to sniff his bum-totally amazing! Is she into balls/retrieving?
 
She does like toys, but wouldn't prioritise them over another dog. I'm opting to avoid the aggression by keeping her off lead, but am leaving the door wide open (so to speak) with her running a mile at warp speed in the other direction. She is, clearly VERY scared. Saw a gentleman walking 2 pointers very early this morning, semi darkness, and foggy. From a good 50 meters + she saw, turned tail and scarpered. Not even remotely close to even see/meet new friends. Makes me weep for her. I'm praying she stays in the 'sheep proof' field. After a long 4 minutes or so, she did come back and was so pleased with herself. I only called once, and that was after a 2 minute pause.
Hope I'm doing the right thing! Will take way longer than the 2 weeks I got, but hoping it is helping her.
