Hi, had my welsh D x broke about 3/4months ago. He was going really well, started lateral movements! The ppl who broke him said t ride him everday for a while. But 2 weeks ago, i had to go into hospital for 5days, so i couldnt ride him. I rode him beggining of this week, and he was nervous, to get him to trot i had to squeeze loads and flick with the whip (andhe usually loves his trotting, and very responsive). And then, when he hears horses walking up and down the barn, or hears them neighing, he like shakes his head n flex'shis neck, and speeds up a bit. He has been known to buck wen he doesnt get his own way, and he's broke my ribs before by bucking me off. When he gets excited because of the other horses, i get a bit scared ad just wanto get off befor hedes any damage, but i stay on for a while longer.
Why has he changed? What can i do?
Thanks

IMO its just cause he's very green. It takes ages for them to know what they are doing. You will just have to keep riding him and he will get better, but it will take time before you can not work him regularly.

Good luck

If he has only been broken 3/4 months ,what is he doing lateral work for?
Are you experienced enough for a young green horse, you say he broke your ribs, when was this ,if he has only just been broken?
I should send him back for some more schooling .

He was with the 'breaking' people for 2months, and they started lateral work with him, and told me to carry on with it, so thats what i did. He broke my ribs about 2years ago, when my ol YO was helping me to break him, he was 4 at this time.

First of all I would have a look at what you are feeding him, make sure the starch is low, many people look at the protein content but the starch is very important too. Try him on a calmer ie Naff Magic (magnesium) if he is only in light work I mean 1 hr hack 3-4 times a week or 2 - 3 hours of schooling then you really need to cut out hard feed and give plenty of quality hay or haylage instead. Then I would lunge him with loads of transitions up and down on a circle, ie 10 paces in trott then up to canter 10 paces canter back to trott for a good 20 mins (little walks in between) before you sit on him, then again when you are on him do loads of serpentines, up & downward transittions giving him so much to think about and listen to that he forgets about other horses calling to him. Put a grab strap on the front D's of your saddle as a peace of mind for you also. Hope this helps!

Thankyou very much! He isn on any hard feed as he's on a diet! With him changing like this, and me getting a bit scared, do you think i should hack him out more often? Or let YO ride him out 1st?

Still don't quite understand .So he was broken 2 years ago, then you broke your ribs, and he was broken again 3/4 months ago?
I think you should let an experiencd rider do more with him until you feel confident or he may injure you again.Difficult to give advice without seeing how you ride.

y old YO tried to beak him 2 yrs ago, she did the ground work ad then when she thought he was ready, she told me to get on, and he started bucking, and threw me off. So then she said to leave him a year or so before starting with him again. Then a year after, we sent him away, and had to pick him back up the day after we dropped him off because his pulled his stifle. Then, we get to when he was actually broken 3/4months ago

Don't panic. Just go back a couple of steps.

Lunge or long rein (whatever it is you do) for a few days, then lunge and get on for a few minuites. Then slowly build up to the former level of work. This will get him listening to you in safety and get him back in to the work frame of mind.

You would do well to get yourself an instructor, or a friend to be with you whilst you bring him back in to work.

You can easily over load a newby horses brains with schooling. If I had a horse like you describe, I would be simply hacking for the nextfew months and lay off lateral schooling.

The people who broke him in were right about doing something every day, no matter if it is simply ground work or riding for a few minuites. With a newly broken horse you are working on their minds rather than their bodies!

If you have a very quiet horse to hack out with then it would be good for you to ride him out but if the thought of it makes you feel really nervous then let the YO ride him out 1st, I have a fairly new horse (2 months) that is very nappy to leave the yard on his own as he is rather a baby so rather than fight with him I walked him on foot out of the yard and about 100 metres down the road then I got on him and he is was absolutely fine!! now I can get on him just out of the yard gates without too much fuss, its a case of feelling comfortable with what works for you! The other thing I used to do was sing out loud as it helped me to breathe and settled my nerves more quickly, we all get nervous, its just being able to deal with it and as it gets better each day the horse gets easier!

He's green so you can't expect him to be consistant. You also sound a little nervous on him so he'll pick up on that and react accordingly. I would get a good instructor for lessons and ride out with others until he gets his confidence and you regain yours.
