My work (I work in admin/recruitment) have decided to give all the staff £150 to spend on our own "personal learning", which basically means anything we want even if it's totally unconnected to work.

So...obviously i want to learn something to do with horses!

I am a novice and have only been a horse owner for about a year, and have only had current pony for 3 months, so I have LOADS I could learn.

Any idead for courses I could do /how I could spend the money? I think it has to be an actual course, I couldn't just spend it on weekly lessons!

I was thinking maybe BHS Horse Owner's Certificate or Stage One? Does anyone have experience of doing these? I don't have much spare time as have horse, full time job and will be starting another (work related) course in September.

We have a similar scheme, but it has to be work-related and you have to write a report saying why it will benefit the business. Hardly worth the effort!

Have you asked if it could be lessons? That would be my first choice. You could go on some lecture Demos? or spend a weekend at somewhere like the Yorkshire Riding Centre.

You could try some of the courses from here;

although for some, you might have to add a bit of cash yourself.
Or I'll teach you free if you come to Glos!

ooo I like the idea of going away somewhere for a weekend to learn something...

I will ask if it can be lessons but I suspect they'll want to see something like a certificate at the end of it

Throw in an extra tenner & you'll get the NVQ 1 &2 in horsecare go & do it with the ILPH as you get to see horses that are difficult opposed to the ones found at yards....they're lovely too

Ooh, do you know where I can find out more about that?

Thanks - it does look good, might see if I can do the BHS stage 1...

jumpthemoon - you realise this means I'll be pestering you for advice even more so that I can learn all the answers

or head over to somerby and i'm sure they'll be able to help you out.

Why not do a stable management course or horseowners course?

You could always come and teach ponio how to lunge. I'll let you do it for free, and not only will I knock you up a certificate but if you succeed I'll give you a bloomin medal too!

well...I've got mine to lunge for me but I am possibly the worst person at lungeing ever. I adopt a jekyll and hyde technique with mine - snarling and growling whenever he tries to spin in on me or stop, smiling sweetly and telling him he's a good boy if he goes round nicely.

Will look into both Brooksby and Somerby.

Shilasdair - I did BSH 1, R&RS and BTEC in Equine studies. I want to do my BHS 2 & 3 in the next year as well. It's just finding the time for the training.

Bex - I'm sure I've got a book I can lend you somewhere on my cobwebby horse book covered shelves!

do a distance learning course on equine Physcology (sp) I am doing one at the mo although I am not sure if I have passed the tme on it. You get 2 years to do and I have only done 1 unit and waiting to hear if I can still do. Let me know if you want details and I will email you the details.

Good going!
It's a shame there's not more funding if you want to study outside of a college or training place isn't it? The exam fees and training can be quite expensive.
