I need to put something on my mares teats to stop a youngster from suckling? Any ideas what i can use? Ath the moment the mare is double rugged so with 2 sets of legstraps the youngster cant get at her so i need to be prepaired.

Thanks

No, please, not stockholm tar! It can be severely caustic on sensitive skin, and could do a heck of a lot of damage.

Try one of the anti-chew sprays, having first of all spot tested it on her udder by dabbing a small area. If it's safe for horses to touch with their muzzles and tongues (and then hopefully go Bleugh), then it should be ok on her teats.

Another alternative would be something like a fly repellent gel with a strong citrus scent/"flavour".

Failing that, you could adapt a belly pad so that it was fitted further back and prevented access to the mare's udder.

are you weaning them together then? if so, could you not keep her rug on until she is dried up? I am sure someone will be able to advise you better than I - but I would think if you were going to be putting anything on her teats it would be best to ask a vet. As cmg has said you may put something on her that causes a reaction.
Tea tree oil sounds a good idea and if you use Vicks the foal will at least have lovely clear airways if he tries to suckle

Well the "foal" is 3!! and the mare is 29!! she sticks her head under anything that stands long enough even geldings!! (but they seem to like it!)
