Posting this on behalf of friend - she's buying a horse trailer but needs now to change her car. Any suggestions as to what to get - will only ever have one horse in the trailer, so weight wise, she reckoned it wouldn't be towing more than 1 ton in total? So, her local garage suggested a Hyundai Fanta Fe or Landrover Freelander. She's only looking to pay about £5k - doesn't want to pay more than she can get for her present car. So any thoughts on the above vehicles or any suggestions as to what is reliable, good to drive etc, she would be grateful to hear from you all.

no to the freelander, dont know about the santa fe. if she can find one within her price bracket then the land rover defender or discovery yes. or ive heard the jeep cherokees are good

nono to the freelander..or a cherokee jeep...(head gasket problems)

the sante fe would do the job...as would a kia sorrento

for 5k she should pick up a decent LWB Shogun too

She should be looking for a car that can tow a minimum of 2.5T

Deffo no to the Freelander.

There are so many secondhand cars that are up to the job, she should have no problem finding something suitable for 5K

I have a Mitsibushi Shogun Sport that I am very pleased with, but there are loads of other options, but in general the smaller SUV's (as in the Freelander) are not suitable

my mechanic said if i ever bought another, he would padlock his workshop shut and never let me in with it!!!

most trailers plus a horse would generally weigh over a ton a thort....
my dad recently bought a ford ranger pick up for £4000 04plate and that was a few months ago so its likely prices will have dropped

Kia Sorento is heavier/more powerful than the Santa Fe but very reasonably priced (and reliable). I have a Sorento and tow one horse happily up and down hills with never a worry about its ability. It's also a nice car generally.

I have a kia sorento and I hate it

Its certainly different.

Even the Kia top technical man agrees its jerky and horrible to tow with, but they cant find anything actually wrong with it
