Hi, I have posted before regarding being able to tow with a Volvo V70, but have realised that this isn't going to be practical or as safe as I can make it for my horse so I need some help from experienced towers to advise what cars you suggest!

I have thought about the usual Discovery, Jeep, Shogun etc but wondered if anyone towed with anything else?

I need something that is as economical as possible but can tow a 510 sized trailer with my horse who is about 600kg, although maybe slightly more at the moment due to the grass! hehe

Any suggestions welcome as I want to adventure down all avenues before making a desision.

Its a big desision for me as I have such an economical car now and I get it fixed for free so this is going to mean more fuel costs and potentially having to pay for repair! I know I have been lucky up until now!

Sorry for going on!

I have had a plethora of 4x4's Landrover, Toyota HiLux, Fourtrak etc but the best pull for your £ is the Isuzu Trooper 3ltr Diesel. It will pull effortlessly without drinking the Diesel.

I cannot recomend them enough for towing boxes, almost everyone I have recomended them to and who has bought them, absolutely love them.

You can pick a good one up from £3k! Plus if you get a Japaneese import (Bighorn) you also get all the extras normally reserved for a BMW or Merc

hope it helps

My OH has a Isuzu Trooper 3l and this tows fine but he is having engine problems. Aparently the 3.1l is the better model. They only produced the 3.0 for a short time due to the problematic engine.
I have also (just today in fact) purchased a Jeep Cherokee as this also has a towing capacity of just over 3T which is that highest max for any car. I would say though that due to the new tax laws etc it appears that many of the new 4X4's being produced have smaller engines and therefore smaller towing capacities. In a few years time I can see that there will not be much choice in heavy duty vehicles.
Also the Ifor Williams site has a useful calculator for the towing capacity required for it's trailers.

I would say a Discovery or Defender are the best vehicles to tow with (I've had both with a 510 trailer and it was effortless), they are both capable of the max 3500KG, lot of the others are only 3000kg or less, it does depend if you are going to carry more than one horse as well, do you share transport with friends? if so you'll have a lot of weight in the back and need something beefy to look after you. The Trooper is a good towing vehicle as well although they don't make it anymore
