Hello there!

I was just wondering what was the first show class you ever entered in? I really want to try go to a local show this summer (I know long way ahead but I'm really eager!) The horse at my school which I ride is 17.2hh ISH bay and he'd be perfect for a hunter classes however with my nerves and his excitement, there's no way I'd be able to control him with his snaffle!

What did you enter for your first ever local show? What would you recommend for a nervous first timer?

I did a very small clear round, an inhand class, and a small ridden class with no jumping. It was my first show and the pony's first show, I probably would have done less if she was my own however because she was an RS pony and it cost quite a lot to hire her out for the whole day, I entered quite a few! I would definitely do an inhand and a ridden class, or maybe some jumping if you feel confident enough :)

It depends on what classes the show offers to be honest. The first ridden classes I did with my new horse were best turned out as it's only walking so he wouldn't get too excited and family horse/pony as it's usually just a bit of fun, in fact he spooked and bucked me off but I got back on getting a special for perseverance.
Others I could suggest would be green novice horse (at the show I went to there was a hoys horse in that class which confused me but oh well, they didn't place lol), novice horse, best novice combination, walk & trot etc. I'm sure there are others but those tend to be quite relaxed and not many people enter. As I said, though, it depends on the show to whats on offer.
Good luck anyway :)

My first show was also my pony's first show (she's a youngster),went show jumping but for novice riders and inexperienced riders or ponies, entered 50cm as a warm up class as didn't get there in time for the clear round, then 60 cm, and 70cm, (highest class was 70) got double clears on 50 and 70, but knocked the last pole in 60 so didn't do a second round! very happy day!

I don't remember, but the first rosette I ever won (perhaps for that show) Best Turned Out, was a brown, three tier oval Highly Commended (consolation in other words) Highland pony with a full mane that I had plaited, the plaits must have been the size of lemons!:D I was 9.

Thanky you Axe Vale PC :) My turn out did get better over the years, especially as at the next PC camp the seniors very kindly pulled his mane to 4" for me :eek: I knew him for another 15 years and his mane never did grow back well :o

Agreed with elsazzo - a pelham would look good especially if your thinking about hunter classes (they are usually the preferred bit for hunter types), plus extra breaks if needed :)

If it's your first show together, maybe try a few in hand classes to get the feel for it all if your nervous? Maybe a clear round of two once your both settled into the day?

I did clear round (we refused every fence but he never was much of a jumper!) and family pony, in which we came 8th...out of 8 competitors. Was so much fun though and pony was very well behaved (apart from the jumping!) x

Did a in hand m&m as my first show. Didn't know what she woud be like out and about and thought in hand was a god idea to test. She was brill and really enjoyed. And very happy with fourth place.

We did Clear Round Show Jumping and the Novice Show Jumping Class (2tft6 ish)

It was my Appy's (and my!) first show and I was really pleased with him as he jumped clear in the clear round and double clear in his class. :)

my first class i ever did was tack and turn out :) came first thanks to mum having spent most of her life plaiting hoys ponies :o but that was when i was 8 years old :o

with taz (17.2hh ISH) i did a 2'3ft class and then 2'6ft and 2'9ft

would have done working hunter except he has a massive scar on the bulb of his heel... well it is his heel so i didnt see the point and he has 13 splints too :( on front on back legs one of which is the whole length of the splint bone :/ so not much point in doing it even in working hunter

First show away from yard with a riding school pony: Hunter Pace
First show with my pony: Highland mare, In-hand class to see how she would behave.
First ridden: Walk & Trot dressage after being backed 5 months. Came 2nd out of about 10, and more importantly she felt fab and relaxed :)

Can't exactly remember which order, I was only little. But first show I did gymkhana games, pony the judge would most like to take home, clear round & an inhand novelty I can't remember, nicest tail or something similar.

I think it was clear round. The jumps were about 6ins high and because my pony went clear, I got to pick a rosette out of a roses tin. I picked a pink and burgundy one because my mums living room at the time had burgundy curtains and cushions and I thought she might let me display it in the living room. No such luck!

We also did equitation and got a special. We got the special every time we entered that class for years. No one had the heart to tell me it meant I was a bit useless and had finished last. Oh well, god loves a tryer I guess. Well if he really loved me he'd have made me a better rider.:D

I'm hoping for a red one next year (19 years later) but I ain't holding my breath!
