I have a 14.1h Welsh X, he's already getting really really hot going out for an hour hack just walking and so he's being clipped this weekend. He's never been clipped before so whether i'll be able to do more than just a bib is a question! He's currently being ridden 4 or 5 days a week, hacking, schooling and a tiny bit of jumping. When we hack we usually go out for 45-90 minutes, trotting up all the hills. Schooling for 30-60 minutes in walk, trot and canter.
He foams up between his back legs, his girth and saddle area get pretty wet with sweat and he sweats from between his front legs and his entire neck. He needs his neck and girth area taken off for certain so I was thinking a blanket clip, keeping half -if not all- his face on and possibly taking his legs off but not sure whether it would look okay.

I'd do a blanket but leave half of face and legs on if he's gonna be turned out :) don't like them being turned out in the cold with clipped legs, must get chilly!

I would start with a blanket or trace . Does most horses well. I would not take legs off, looks quite silly with a blanket and if he has less hair on body legs wont get as hot. Hair on legs is also needed for protection from the weather. I like half head, but think it probably depends on what he will let you do.

Hope he behaves well for you clipping.

If you have a 'tame' clipping friend like I do, I go for the following:
Mid Sept: bib - purely gullet & jaw.
End Sept: Trace clip
Mid Oct: Repeat the trace clip, or give chaser clip
End Oct: Chaser, Blanket or everything off apart from front of face & legs

Then see how work & weather & rugging goes.......

im sure he's quite a hardy horse, so I would go for a blanket and just make sure he has some good rugs! defo keep an eye on the weather! light weight rug if its going to be wet over night for the next couple of weeks
