I've found it really interesting seeing what collars dogs wear since we've been doing lots of Christmas fairs. Lots seem to wear the synthetic looking type that just slip over the dogs head if they pull back!

Our Spins just wear plain leather collars, and the puppy has a slip lead for going out and about in public. The old girl just has a trigger hook plain lead as she is very good girl.

The most popylar we seem to be asked about is the adjustable half check which interests me. I don't like full choke chains and this seems a good alternative.

Also it's interesting that lots of people don't have ID tags on their collars, they seem surprised when I mention it's law to have a collar and tag on your dog with your contact details on it.

Anyway, I babble. What does your dog wear?

(I feel like Gok for dogs!)

padded synthetic collar for day to day wear (choice of 3 colours

)with a lovely leather one for best.

My dog is chipped and has 2 tags on each collar (one with my details & one with his dog walkers details) - Im taking no chances!!!

mine dont wear collars when at home or out on the yard even, but when they do wear them, they have 2 each

Ranging from leather nice ones too cheap synthetic doesnt matter if they get ruined ones. My lab wears a half check and i wouldnt be without it, works well for him.

I tell you what i did buy recently from a county show..... its a slip lead but it also goes over there nose in like a figure of 8 fashion, so looks like a kind of halti....anyway i was very sceptical and again it was for my lab as in public he gets super excited and really strong, and i have to say it worked wonders, yopu dont have to pull about on it or even hold it that firmly. I really like it but havent seen them since.

Generally mine don't wear collars at all at home. For walking they wear large link choke/check chains . However when I let them off lead I take the collars off if 2 of them are running together, I have heard of too many horrific accidents when dogs play fighting have got caught in each others collars. I do have fabric flat collars for when I take them on holiday or similar, with discs. They are also tattooed, dont' need a scanner to read them.

My whippets have lovely wide leather collars made by my saddler, with smart brass fittings, they have tags on, and they are also chipped.

That slip lead sounds like a gencon collar, operates from behind the head rather than pulling their nose round like a halti. I have one and found it really useful when Evie was a lunatic.

Our GPS has a rolled leather one which he doesnt wear much and a half leather and a green material rolled and the boxer has a matching one but in brown these are for the yard, general use.
Boxer lost his leather one while we were on holiday so still need 2 replace.
Both are chipped and GSP (who wonders) has a tag. Boxer lost his with collar need 2 replace.

My old girly used to wear a half check synthetic collar. My 2 now wear nice matching leather ones in pink and black

they all have id tags, their dog walkers tag and are microchipped.

Both dogs are licensed, tattoeed and chipped, they do not wear collars at home.

They have a choke chain each (one heavy link brass, one long finer link) for normal walks on the dead ring, clipped to the live ring for crowd control

very long leather lead each and a slip lead each for short walks/transport and training.

B has a Lupi harness/long line for the beach and a very wide padded half check for tracking.

I also have a Sprenger pinch for when B was being an arse but I have not used it for ages.

Mine never wear collars

Labs can't wear collars as it would be dangerous while they're working so they have slip leads on if required, Beastie wears a check chain as she can be an arse occassionally and she respects it more than a collar. For a small dog she is surprisingly strong at times!

Henry has a padded synthetic collar in cool camo print

He also has a best leather collar for parties

He also has a harness, which is for walks in the dark with a light clipped on, and for very exciting on lead days (eg events, walks with lots and lots of livestock such as in the Peak District).

Jesse has a synthetic new florescent collar, clip's closed...as shes black i decided it was a good idea for evening walk visability on country roads, they could see me but not her. before that she had a red synthetic one of she same type for years....she wears it 24/7.

When im bringing her out, i bring a choke chain and lead with me in case i need to grab her quickly. She is good to heel and recall but when meeting other dogs the lead and chain go on.As she can occasionally have issues with small dogs.just JRT's actually its a bit odd they start the usuall furore of barking and she poof's up and starts giving them evils so occasioanlly needs reminding to walk on and ignore the little bugger's.

She doesnt pull me(she tries to take advange of other people if they let her and dont tell her to walk firmly though),so its not an issue of needing it just habit and its atached to our lead since our last dog round 8 or 9 years ago.

She also wont follow you beyond any gate without a lead so i need something in my hands...
Shes not microchiped. The only place she could end up is in the pound or vet's,neither of which are gaurenteed to look for one

, in the worst case scenario.
She doesnt leave the garden without someone leading her so unless shes stolen so i dont see the point.Shes also the only black lab in our area...our number and adress is on her collar

No collar at home, and a synthetic padded collar with a plastic gripper fastening (like the type on backpacks) for out walking or when visiting friends or family.

We used to have a beautiful leather one but it got ruined at the beach (in spite of washing and cleaning it with Effax)

Her collar has a tag with my name and number on it incase she gets lost- although she is also chipped

Tink has a plain leather and brass one as she can be trusted not to wreck it.
Dougal has some scratty old blue nylon job, as he once went through 6 collars in as many weeks.

Eta- Both licenced, chipped and tag has surname, phone number and post code on.

Leah has a synthetic rainbow-coloured collar with an ID tag - she used to have a tag saying she's microchipped too but she lost it somehow. She is chipped though, obviously.

Poppy has a red tartan collar which is a hand-me-down from our old Jack Russel. Poor doggy, in eight years we've never thought to buy her her own collar!

Hers doesn't have a tag, but she is microchipped. I didn't know it was illegal not to have a tag... better get that sorted then!

Willow wears a pink and purple half check collar through the day and when we're walking her. We take it off at night as the jangling is annoying!!
It has a double sided tag on with the topline of our address and my mobile number on one side and the topline of my mums address and her mobile number on the other side. Both sides also say she is chipped.

My lovely friend is making her a leather half check for best.

My greyhounds have a selection of fancy martingale (much like a half check but all fabric) collars and the leather hound collars they came with. The hound collars are quicker to put on being a buckle fastening, but i prefer the martingales as they sit loosely on the neck most of the time unless they pull or try to reverse out and then it tightens up to preven escape. One of my dogs leans against his hound collar but doesn't with the martingale, so he's much easier to walk with that collar.
They also wear a normal webbing collar to hold their tags most of the time. The idea being that if they do manage to slip their walking collar they still have ID, although they are chipped anyway.

Stella wears a martingale harness, and occasionally a harness made from soft mesh fabric. She walks nicely on the lead 99% of the time, but the martingale kicks into action if she pulls. It's better to walk flat-faced breeds in harnesses rather than collars.

Otto has a Padded Synthetic collar with a disc on that he wears on a walk. He never has his lead attached to it, he wears a slip lead, and doesn't wear his collar whilst working.
Although it is still a tad dangerous for him to wear his collar out walking, I didn't trust him not to disappear at first and now it's just habit.

Are leather collars safer for dogs ( like for horses) or collars with a leather breaking points? Or does it matter if synthetic or not?
I like my pups reflective collar but if leather is safer i would definatly change it.
