Hello - I've been lurking here for a long time and can usually find answers to my questions by searching but am stuck with this one!

My 6 year old daughter is doing her first in hand and ridden (leadrein) show this weekend. It is only a bit of fun for her at the local pony club. She is riding a black shetland pony.

What colour gloves are correct for lead rein classes? I need to order them tonight so they arrive in time for the show. She has a tweed jacket, black hat, brown jodphur boots, beige jods and a black tie.

Also, she has long hair should I put it in a plait or pony tail?

Thank you.

I have seen most children have plaits though i'm sure either will be fine.

not black gloves! They are only for people in mourning (in the show ring). Brown gloves are always correct in any showing class.

Brown gloves. Plait her hair and try and tie with ribbons that match the ponies browband. Also used to find a matching buttonhole flower went down well. Cheap roses from the garage finally came into thier own!

But most of all smile , have fun and good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I have just ordered her a brown pair.

Like the idea of two plaits and ribbons, only problem is the pony has a black browband (not that you can see much of it with his huge forelock) so what colour ribbons?

We (read my daughter) wants to get him a coloured browband, preferably pink, but I'm not sure about that one. His tack is all black with a pink stripe on his saddlecloth. Probably not correct but we have to have a hint of pink somewhere - lol.

Then I would get her some pink ribbons! If that will make her happy and relaxed and enjoy herself all the better.
Our old pony had to wear a bright yellow and gold browband, thankfully he was very dark bay and it looked quite good on him but I thought it was garish! Daughter thought it brought her luck and he looked lovely!

Yes, pink ribbons in her hair, I'm sure she will love that.

She is really looking forward to the show, she has only been riding since February and is doing really well and loving it. She is also having a go at dressage on Saturday!

I'll let you all know how she gets on.

Thanks.

Another thing to remember is jodphur clips or make sure thick elastic is sewn to the bottom of her jodphurs.

I think if you look on some of the websites like pretty ponies they have lists of correct turnout for different classes. But remember at local level it is more important to be neat and tidy with very clean tack rather than 100% correct. I remember it was a minefield but a great way to give little ones ring experience.
Let us know how she gets on.

Yes- that will be fine....daughters first pony was a shettie and we showed her very successfully with a cub saddle and no saddle cloth- she won the championship at RC.....above all else- have fun, thats the main thing.

When we first started I would spend ages just looking at what everyone else did and each show we just just changed stuff and got better.

saftery stirrups are a must too...some judges are VERY hot on this....

Good luck, have fun and post some piccies please!

You should post pics if you take any. I ADORE shetlands and am going 'ahhhhh' just thinking of your little one and his fluffy forelock :)

Good luck for the show, sure you'll be fine, i have my first showing show next weekend too and was going to ask what colour gloves so you've saved me a job!

He is a very cute pony to look at and loads of people go ahhh but he is a little monster - thats my daughter's nickname for him.

She did do an inhand show with him a few weeks ago, very low key. He took a chunk out of her arm in the most handsome gelding and she sobbed all through the class - he of course was standing all innocent as I had to come in the ring to keep an eye. Then he stopped in the middle of the child handler and had a wee - everything out - good job he is so short not many of the children noticed!

When she did that show she had only just started leading him herself and I didn't worry too much about what she wore, I was more worried she would get run over by him! This time, being a ridden one we are going to put more effort in.

We are not expecting him to do really well, he is not registered (he is a rescue) so are only doing the fun classes like best turned out, child rider and pony club pony (don't have high hopes for that one).

I will take lots of pics and will let you see us in all our gear - lol!

To begin with our specialist class was the best tail. We did this one because it involved walking into the ring and standing still. I think the first few shows we went to this was all we did.

Still got a rosette to take home which she loved and it built her confidence no end.

Ah it's my daughters first show on Saturday too, we tried all her stuff on last night, very sweet, I'm plaiting her hair with ribbon to match her tie. I'm glad we had a trial run though, it took ages to get her ready!!!!

Good luck on Saturday!

We are doing the best mane and tail but that is in hand so she only has to stand with him.

Claireelizabeth - good luck for Saturday. I think I'll have a trial run tonight with her outfit just to make sure. The hardest thing is keeping pony and child clean at least until they get into the ring

Have fun
Pink tie and hair ribbons will look sweet, but no buttonhole flower on a tweed jacket,
The brown gloves and plain browband on an M&M type are correct turnout
