my foal storm was born dark bay/brown, and then he looked to be going grey..... but his head and legs are going black and the mane and tail are staying dark brown, will he be blue roan? his mum is chestnut roan and dad is piebald!

:D He looks roan right now, but he may be one of those horses that changes colour by the year! a definite 'what shall I be this season?' Fun:)

Enjoy him.:)

he is a wait and see color! looking roan y now! you should know what color he will settle into by the time he is 3 or 4. a little bit like opening your xmas presents early. patience.

A proper bay roan! Mum looks to be a minimal roan, have seen some on the New Forest that are roan, that you might easily describe as sabino or rabicano type ticking but not all over classic roan! Roans can be born solid but at foal moult you will see the ticking appearing, sometimes only in small areas but with him it’s full on!

I would say that mum’s roan gene plus dads white modifiers have boosted the roan to a full classic all over body roan. That’s what he looks like so that’s what I’d put on his paperwork.

It’s not grey, If it was it is very rapid and the head and legs would be affected, he could have grey if dad was a “blue” piebald? but if dad is solid then it can’t be grey and with those tell tell head and legs solid, he's a true roan. Another tell is that if he has (being a boy) got any scars on the roan bits they will grow back dark!

But that then gives us all a new headache to add to a list when we see a horse with white hairs on a small patch of coat!!!
