I'm asking this on behalf of a friend - I think he's smokey black, but am interested to hear from people who've had both smokey blacks and buckskins from foals, so know how the coats change. Last pics are of him as a yearling.

Mum is black, dad is cremello.

Definitely looks like a smokey black to me.
Coat is darker (redder) than it would be with a buckskin (yellow/tannish shades), no definite black points (mane or tail), a more even colouring that is typical for smokey blacks (mane and tail and body hairs more or less the same colouring).
But the most definite indication for me are the inner ear hairs ... with buckskins these are the same colour as the body or ear hairs; with smokey blacks they are much lighter even creamy coloured.

In the rest of the world he would be called a buckskin but in England he is called a dun.

This is very confusing for many non-english because you're dealing with two very separate colour genes and although a horse may carrier and show both, the genes are non-related and totally separate from each other.

If she can wait a week or so I am talking to a company to do some testing that will tell the difference between bay and black and tan so she will know more about the base colour.
