I just wondered on opinions of what colour tack to put my mare in?

She has currently been in Black but am currently looking for a new saddle for her and ones that suit are all in brown/havanna.

I'm planning to do dressage with her, starting at Prelim and hopefully work my way up with here. I dont normally see brown tack when out at dressage comps.

What do you guys think. Here she is (I hope i've uploaded photo correct)

I think she would suit havana. Is there a set colour you should go for in Dressage? I know you need brown tack in the higher levels of working hunter ( could be wrong :o). Apart from that I didn't think there was any requirement like that in other disciplines.

Thanks for the replies so far. More opinions would be great! : )

I am thinking that brown/havanna might be a softer look on her. The black bridle looks a little bold on her with her little head : )

she's lovely :D Love the almost dappled effect on her coat (I'm sure there's a more technical term than that) :)

I think black would look smart on her because of her legs, mane and tail, but I would go with thinner straps on tne bridle as she is delicate

Thanks. She is very pretty, evem if i do say so myself! lol

Believe it or not the bridle she is in has rolled leather browband and cheek pieces but i agree it still looks chunky on her - she has such a small head

I personally prefer black tack, but I think she would suit both.

She would also look good in that reddish/brown. I had my old boy in that colour and it really looked good on him. It almost looks burgandy, sorry not very good at describing lol!

As far as I know there's no hard and fast rule for tack colour in Dressage. I seem to remember a thread saying that BD rules state it must be english tack in black, brown, navy or grey? Not that I've ever seen a navy or grey saddle!
I think she would suit either. I tend to have havana tack for mine, as its more correct for showing, if we fancy having a go. My red and white youngster has a tobacco/nutty colour bridle that he wears for in-hand hacking, and that looks lovely. My piebald mare wears it sometimes too paired with a dark brown saddle, and a black breastplate! But I'm not too concerned about mismatched tack for hunter trials or unaff SJ!
If you fancy havana, go for havana!

You are lucky, I think your horse would look good in both Black and a good dark Havana colour. I would steer clear of the yukky light tan colour though, sorry if anyone likes it but I think it is horrid!

Orchardbeck, she's called bella may. She's 5 end of may and had her since a 1.5year old. She was born and bred on the yard. Her sire and dam hav had othe foals so u could well of had a relative : ) xxx

Definitely black. My girl is bay ALL over, not a speck of white on her, and I think if I got brown tack, it would just be a brown horse with brown tack........no contrast!! She's gorgeous though :)

She would look nice in brown or black IMO. I would get the saddle that fits her best (whatever colour it is... maybe not pink though) and then buy a bridle to match. ;)

Thanks for all the replies.

I do agree that black looks smarter on her.

I think the best advice was to get whatever saddle fits best and then match the bridle.

Still undecided! Grrrr! : )

I like brown... Pretty much on anything except black or grey...

My youngster is bay has black points and absolutely no white, but I just think brown blends in and I prefer it to the contrast of black... He's got a brown bridle and his 'wander around with the stirrups swinging' saddle is an old brown one... When he's ready for a fitting I'll stick with brown... Son's chestnut has brown tack and numnah... His black saddle stuck out like a sore thumb... :)

Ooh - how lovely that orchardbeck knows your horse!

I think black...my mare is this colour with the lovely dapple and I always thought she suited black.

I do like the Havana too...I think either would look good.

She is lovely by the way!

Black is the norm for dressage but there is no rule against brown & a proportion of of riders use brown. Unlike showing it is not how you look as much as how you do !

Thanks for the lovely comments about my girlie : ) I think she knows how pretty she is and acts like a real princess most of the time lol

I think i'm gona pop my gelding's Brown bridle on her at the weekend as this should give me a rough idea of how it'll look and then try to make a decision from there.

Or get 2 sets of tack, 1x black and 1x Havana and then i can pick and choose : ) If only i had enough money to be able to do that!
