Hi guys its my first time ever posting here and ive got a very VERY important question for you. Any experienced breeders or owners out there have any advice on how my little guy will turn out. His dam is grey and his sire is flaxen chestnut. When he was born he was a creamy chestnut colour with fawn like legs but now hes 6 weeks old he has started to lose his foaly fluff and has got panda eyes. Where his coat is rubbing off is also coming through a dark brown so does anyone think he will stay chestnut? I love him whatever colour he is but would love him to look just like his daddy. Thankyou!

Ps. Will try and attach a photo when i figure this thing out!

That depends on whether the dam passed on her grey gene - if she only had one, she may not have done.

My boy had the same colour parents as yours and he stayed chestnut because his mother only had one copy of the grey gene and he didn't inherit it (it was 50/50 if he would or wouldn't inherit grey). His dam was a chestnut/grey, so there wasn't any option of black based colours or dilutes as neither parent had those genes.

The foal coat often does look slightly different to the subsequent coats, so him coming through darker isn't unusual. Do you know what colour his dam was before she greyed out? The fact that he hasn't got 'grey goggles' yet is a good sign, but he could develop them in the future if he has inherited grey. Some greys 'grey out' faster than other.

This is my gelding's sire.

My grey on the other hand had a chestnut dam and a chestnut/grey sire (one copy of grey, so again a 50/50 chance of inheriting it) and she did inherit the grey gene, so is chestnut/grey herself.

Her sire.

ETA - if your horse's dam has two copies of grey, then your horse will grey out.

Faracat does the base colour decide the colour of the fleabites? Have always wondered but never been sure.

Yes, her fleabites are chestnut. I have seen a few that have 'chestnut' fleabites on the body and black ones on the legs, so I guess they must have been bright bay before greying out. :)

Thank you Faracat, especially for the piccies. I could look at foalies all day! Its all so interesting and good fun guessing what colour our foalies will end up. His dam was dark bay before she greyed out.

I will try when i get home faracat!

He is dark around his eyes and ears xx

Sounds like he might be bay then, or possibly liver chestnut, seal brown or black (black horses are often born a pale fawn colour). If he's bay, seal brown or black, and his legs were a fawn colour then he most likely won't grey out because bay, brown and black horses that turn grey usually are born with black legs. What colour is his mane and tail?

Gorgeous foal Wagtail! His main is a deep chestnut and his tail is Chestnut and white just like his daddys x

Sounds gorgeous! He might be a liver chestnut with a flaxen tail then which would be stunning. Look forward to seeing some pics!

My baby shed out quite dark around her eyes/ muzzle at about 1 month old but now is a very bright orange with a flaxen mane :)

I think you will keep the ginger ;) :).

Interestingly if they are born looking to have an 'adult' colour it is an indicator they will grey too, yours looks suitably foaly chestnut to me :D

Awww thankyou, I was hoping he will stay ginge as he is just so gorgeous!! I guess I can forgive him for not being flaxen ;)

Yet my chap - who is flaxen - looks not too dissimilar to yours, with a chestnut mane and a cream underside to his tail.

I think that you'll have to wait and see. :)
