What comes up on the scanner when you scan a microchip?

And if it's just a number now do you find out which horse it is and the ownership details ?

Thanks, emily xx

just a number, then you contact an identichip company who will put you in contact with company that made the chip with that number, if you are a vets or similar you will have a registration code and they will give you owners details, if you are a member of the public they will ask for your details and pass them to the registered owner of the animal and ask them to contact you.

hope that makes sense

Hopefully the number which matches the horse's passport comes up!

If the horse is microchipped and the horse doesn't have a passport or owner!? then you would have to know the first 2 numbers of the chip which denotes the country horse was chipped in and then try and track down the information via the breed society. If horse is of unknown origin it's worse than a needle in a haystack scenario since the demise of the "wonderful" NED.

The complete Microchip system is a total joke!
When a microchip is implanted in to a horse there is absolutely no obligation for the vet to provide the name and contact details of the owner to the microchip company.
Neither is there any obligation by the microchip company or their distributors to record who they sold the microchip to.
So although it is compulsory to implant a microchip in to a horse there is no legal requirement to record any details.
Unfortunately there are also at least 7 different microchip systems and the scanner of one will not necessarily identify the others.
There is no central data base for microchips and some of the manufacturers do not have one.
However a freeze Mark can be read by anyone without needing any special equipment.
I go with a freezemark every time. (Best to have shoulder of horse freezemarked so that it can be seen when ridden and horse does not need any time off after being freezemarked.

Once you have the microchip number you can have a look on the grassroots equine chip checker. You just type the number in and it will tell you if they have a match. That's how I found my rescues true identity. They only deal with a certain number of breed societies though.

This is what you get, if you enter a number

PIO Sex Alive/Dead D.O.B Colour Microchip

Irish Draught Horse Society Male Alive 11/07/2013 Chestnut 941000014173028

That's a newly registered one of mine (I was surprised that it worked!)

Currently covering 203,000 odd horses - the breed societies taking part are listed on the search page - www.grassroots.co.uk/chipchecker.html
