Following on from the post below - what condition score do you think Bomber is here - summer pictures? He is about the same weight now, but very hairy!

Very good condition but regarding scores be aware that out of 5 that doesn't mean 5 is best!
Someone asked our vet to assess her horse's condition and he said 3/5. She and I were rather upset because he looked just right to us. It turned out 3 is perfect, 4 a bit overweight, 5 very overweight and so on down the scale..

LOL! I wish 5 were best - I would be a fantastic

I would like him to be a 3 but thought he would be leaning towards a 4 really. I can't easily feel his ribs but his bottom doesn't have a gutter. His weight is about 680 - 700Kg, girth is hole 2 on one side an 3 on the other

I like this cob a lot, although in my opinion he is a little bit "soft" condition-wise but is obviously very healthy so that might be his natural weight anyway.

You certainly have nothing to worry about.

Oh, he's lovely. It's difficult to get it right without being able to feel, but I'd say about 3.5 (maybe 4 in second pic). However, you do have to bring breeding into it, and he looks fine, plus judging by it, you show, in which case he looks perfect weight for showing.

Looks about right to me, however you might want to get a bit off if he is still that weight now, with the spring grass fast approaching (I know that is easier said than done my cob in siggy lives off thin air!! How can you cut that down?

).

P.S. Lovely tail, Ohh how I long for a black tail.

He currently gets adlib haylage, 2 to 3 lbs of oats, 2 scoops of hi fi, 1.5 scoops of kwik beet and 200 mls soya oil, with NAF pink powders and cider vinegar each day- so ther is scope for cutting down

He is lovely but I would say he is a little too heavy, not much. Although I do prefer horses to be much leaner than that so perhaps I am biased

Not sure about score but he looks very healthy to me! Nice shiny coat, I would say about the right weight. I don’t think you have anything to worry about!

What a stunner!!!

I get comments about Patches being too fat all the time. Mostly by people who've never owned a cob and expect her to be proportioned the same as their thoroughbreds! Bomber looks fine to me, as a fellow cob owner!

If Patches drops any more weight than she is now, she starts to look tucked up. Patches will always have a big bottom, that's her type, but I can easily feel her ribs, she's not cresty and is in regular work. The only difference between Bomber and Patches is that Patches only has hay and a handful of Super Mollichop lite with her joint supplement and 1/4 cup of Sunflower seeds in one daily feed. She'd be mahoosive if I fed her Bombers ration....plus haylage too!

I'm more worried that I'm too big for her!

Sorry - I think 4 - 4.5. I did condition scoring at my NVQ yesterday, without feeling it is difficult to say, however with an apple bottom like that I would say pretty overweight, you should be harsher with your judgment, particularly as we will be coming into spring soon (hopefully).

Not sure if anyone else is aware (I wasn't) but when feeling the ribs you need to check the top third of the barrel, not along the sides (as I alsways used to). Also its best to separate into 5 areas, Neck, back, rump, ribs and shoulders, the fat is laid down roughly in that order. Mark out of five then divide by 5 to get final score.

We were looking at a cob very similar to yours, we all scored it as 3 when it was actualy a 5! To add another downer, the cob was at ILPH where they are scrutinised very closely, she has been overwight most of her life. Mind you she can only be worked lightly.

Apart from being a bit portly your cob is fab, lovely sheen and beautiful markings.
