well yesterday my horses leg swelled up, its his front off-side swollen on knee and down inside of cannon bone. he is not lame and it is slightly warm, but not boiling. i have began cold hosing, and put him on box rest.

he was in field on his own so it is not a kick and there is no obvious marks or areas of pain on it.

could it be a splint?
here is a pic of side view.

Have you really looked for any cuts? A horse at my yard came in from an empty field with a random swollen leg, and we all thought it was a pulled muscle. It wasn't until he was clipped, that we found a rather nasty cut by his elbow. Once we dealt with that, the swelling went down!!

Is he lame?

a splint doesnt come up that quickly it is more likely due to direct trauma,
he has possibly kicked himself, whilst running about or rolling or possibly rolled onto a stone and bruised it
also check for thorns, or a bee sting it could also be a mosquito bite which he has reacted too
you may need to clip the area to find any injuries, but keep cold hosing, and maybe try an antihistimene for it may be an allergy, and rub an antiseptic cream in well
i would probably leave him out in the field if there is no open wound to avoid him stiffening up as he is not lame
hope this helps
