When my yearling colt was stabled he only just could get his head over the door and used to stand nearly choking himself. I have noticed that he has a lump on his throat and has a runny nostril and a cough. I am taking him to the vets tomorrow but can anyone think of what it could be?

I have just about had enough of the vets to last me a lifetime.

OH NO! I hope everything goes well.... I am with Mattilda if you even suspect that it might be strangles DO NOT take your horse to the vet. If it is strangles then your yard will be locked down by DEFRA and you will not be able to move horses on or off the yard.... I dont mean to scare monger but like Mattilda says its highly contagious and its better to be safe than sorry....

Thanks but not strangles.

I meant to mention that it is further down the neck and the runny nostril is green ( out on grass ). He has put weight on since being out and is still eating, drinking and running round like a nutter. He has been like it for a couple if weeks. I thought he would get better with being out and keeping his head down but it hasn't so vets it is.
