With all this talk about how important the mares are, what did your mares do before they made babies?

My mare has no breeding, but did this.....

All rounder pony really!!

Wow, she was a busy little bee and looks like she is having a ball. Nice jumping style.

Well mine have been :-

Showjumpers - Sandrina, Rybalia, Diamond Pergola, Elmevangs Jutlantia

Dressage horses - Elemevangs Jutlantia, Broadstone Wizadora, Yasmin.

Endurance Horses - Pedruga, Brenta 3, Travelling First Class.

Show Hunter - Rybalia

And I have a 4 year old about ready to pop, who will grace the dressage arena next year.

Think thats the lot??????????????????

Just a few then!! I think its nice when they have a career first.

When you just have one horse, they do tend to have to be a bit of allrounders. We just do what we enjoy!

My mare (unknown breeding) was predominately a dressage horse, i competed her at medium level and she was Reserve Petplan Prelim Champion in 2006 and Petplan Novice Open National Champion in 2007. I bought her as a riding school horse when she was aged 9 so i trained her from that (not with the intention to do dressage). I also hunted her and did County Level Working Hunters with her. She'l come back into work over the winter and then will go back into foal in 2009 possibly to Speilberg or Sir Rubin - but its a long way off yet for any decisions to be made!!

I bought my ISH (King of Diamonds) mare as a showjumper, and won the Pony Club Area Nationals. She then tore her deep digital flexor tendon whilst jumping locally, forcing jumping retirement and 1 year box rest. I then decided to try dressage with her, it took a lot of blood sweat and tears to calm her down and prep her for the arena but got her up to medium level. Her paces began to decline due to Navicular syndrome, and just struggled to produce any good medium or extended trot, and tight circles were becoming an issue...so shes good for having babies and eating lots of food hehe

Ours raced before becoming broodmares and are now breeding racehorses (they have also been Head Stud Book graded - one of them scoring 10's at grading) - and a couple of them have won at both County and National shows. The younger ones got shown and won at County and National, then went on to race and are now at home preparing to event - the fillies will eventually be broodmares and the geldings will, hopefully continue to compete.

Ha ha thought this thread was going to be about what they did literally before foaling........

smashing photos.. lovely wee jumper.

Ours haven't done a great deal bar Quinine who jumped up to 1.30, dressage, workers, well just about everything, state performance tested in station, IBOP mare performance tested... hacked, went to the beach, did it all really, such a verstaile mare with a brave heart..

Edwina showed mainly, coloured classes, inhand classes, missed HOYS by one place at Royal Lancs being only six weeks under saddle, supreme and reserve supreme champion Fife Show, produced the first coloured colt foal in the hunter broodmare and foal class at the Royal Higland Show.. and now she is a mummy having produced three cracking foals, and is driving me NUTS waiting on this one... due any MINUTE

ah tail cocked do we have action............ grrrrr.

Prija did some dressage in Holland so I was told but not so sure that any of that was true as she has had three foals registered and is only seven.. mmmmm

That's about it, all the others have mainly been bought as youngsters on the basis of the predicates their damlines have.. as in what those dams have produced and what their progeny have acheived..

my mare jumped up to 1.35 BSJA, we tried a bit of dressage but it wasn't really her forte. she was £18 short of being a grade A SJ when she decided to have a panic attack on the lorry.

Bit of everything!!

Showed at county level as 4 & 5 year old hunter, did a bit of cross-country for fun, little bit of affiliated dressage and lots and lots of riding club stuff.

A kick causing tendon damage put paid to 'proper' competing

but she carried on hacking and did some unaff dressage locally.

She's a lovely all-rounder and a great mum!

Thank you. She's a super mare that I've had lots of fun with.

The foal is last years, nine months old now with a trot to die for and soooo much personality. Hopefully she's going to be my friends future dressage super-star!!

Just inseminated last week so fingers crossed for a uneventful 11 months and another lovely baby next year.

Mares 1 and 2 - Grade A show jumpers.
Mare 3 - show jumper (would have been a grade A had I not decided to get squashed by another horse!

)
Mare 4 -broodmare since 3 years of age.

1 Raced but prefered doing prancing trot

1 Dressage upto Advanced (only put in foal due to change in our circumstances)

1 performanced tested and gained Premium State in Germany, Gorgeous mare too good not to have ridden competitive life but too good not to breed from!

Melody showjumped and was supposed to go and compete in Europe but a suspensory ligament injury put a stop to that. Unfortunately her previous owner was a complete numpty and started jumping her again less than 2 months after a neurectomy and she has been on/off lame ever since.
She is a fab jumper which is a real shame but I think she'll like being a mummy as she was trying to steal another mare's foal the other day, naughty girl!

My mare Atalanta (Amy) has been a fantastic all rounder. Origionally bought as a riding club horse for me she did riding horse, working hunters, dressage, SJ and event riding club teams. Then with professional riders she did BSJA (grade B and[ eventing (adv)

I have several mares not bred from yet, they are still in competition or youngsters, but they will be joining the broodmare band.

Very interesting thread, and some nice action shots of everyones girls.
Mine have done a mixture, some have always been broodmares, some competed first
Gerty evented to advanced, then graded head stud book SHB
Dell jumped to Foxhunter, then did dressage to medium, then became a broodmare and will be graded this season
Dee has always been a broodmare but she is graded and her oldest son is too. She would have spent a few years competing had she had been attacked by another horse and badly injured
Venezia has always been a broodmare and is TBF graded, from a very successful mare line. She was too good not to breed from!
Elf is only 4 this year and will do her TBF grading this autumn and start her ridden career once we both get maternity duties over with
