as of a previous post i have started to ride my newish horse after 3 months of having him he has been fine in paddock just been walking and trotting trying to build my confidence with him, but im really worried about taking him out for the first time i am really scared that when he sees a open bit of field he is just going to take off with me what would i do if this happened???

when in doubt ask someone with a steady horse to go with you its never as bad as you think.
i am schooling a mare at the moe and she is young and spooky. so the first time i took her out i went into the school to take the freshness out of her then went on a small hack and although she was spooky it was grand.

dont have anyone near me who could come out with me the girl i keep my horse with i could go with her but to be fair i think they wind each other up.
honestly though what would you people do if he tanked off with me he is 17.2 and a very big strong lad??
 
If you make sure the horse is used to walking in open fields and doesn't expect to canter every time it sees a blade of grass you shouldn't have a problem. Try just doing a couple of strides then come back to trot - you'll get a feel for how the horse reacts when going into canter and you'll still have enough control to stop. ibot's idea about someoe on a steady horse going with you is good, but if you can't find anyone could you get someone to go on foot?

If the worst happened and the horse did take off, sit up, keep your legs wrapped around the horse and turn - if you can canter alongside a large hedge you would be able to turn the horse into it in this event. If you get him used to walking through open fields though, this is very unlikely to happen.

just really worried and scared that as soon as he hits it he will take off and i wont be able to be him back i ride him in just a eggbutt snaffle. i am very nervous and have very little confidence and i think when i do take him out i am going to be a nervous wreck.
 
yes probably a good idea we have a great bond now just after 3 months of having him and i am super with him on the ground not scared at all or when lunging him just the riding part of it that gets at me.

no not having lessons dont know of anyone or anywhere around here that does but i desperatley need some.
 
It sounds like you definitely need some lessons. Why not put a post on here to see if anyone can recommend a good instructor in your area? Or ask in local tack shops? If you aren't very confident it's not a good idea to try going out in open spaces, as your nerves would transmit to the horse and probably make him nervous as well!

You need to make sure you are in control in walk, trot and canter before you go out into the big wide world - you'll have confidence in him as well then. I'm sure you'll be fine - just take your time and don't rush things!
 
thanks jumpthemoon i will do that.

jumping jack: i am based in kessingland just near lowestoft suffolk there is one person who i have been told about but i see them on someones horse and i didn't like the way they where treating it.

anyone know of any one who could give me a few lessons at where i am as i dont have a trailer would be great.
