Hi

Someone recently said about one of my friends from my livery yard that she looked to big for her pony, so I wanted to ask what people thought to my size on my pony. I'm 5ft 7 and he is 14.1/14.2hh he's a welsh D X dartmoor and is 5. thanks

Ooh, going against the trend here I did think you looked a bit big on him. Not too heavy, just on the big side. But, he doesn't look uncomfortable and he looks quite happy - wish I'd stuck to something smaller than my 16.2 boy having found that its a long way down to fall !!!!

I'm joining moodymare96 here, I thought you were too tall, particularly in second pic, not too heavy just too tall.

I have to say im joining here and saying you do look to big but your not to big for him and if he has a lot of filling out to do then you should be fine!

I'd say you're on the edge of being too big but then he might get bigger. I'm at the edge of being too tall for my mare who is 15.2 and I'm 5ft 8 and I know that it does make it more difficult to ride her sometimes because my legs are so far down. If you wanted to do lots of dressage and schooling I'd say get a bigger pony but if you just want to hack then you'll be fine. The more important question isn't how tall you are but how much do you weigh? It's your weight that will affect whether he is able to carry you

Yes you look "top-heavy" on him, however he will fill out in the next few years and then you will look fine. I certainly wouldn't worry about it though.

Why would she need a bigger pony to do dressage or schooling? As I said Im taller and my pony is 13.3hh and I can do pretty much anything with him!

Hi, Nice pony, he just needs a bit of muscle, to bring his back up (top line) he looks as if he has some weight to gain yet. He will carry you fine as you are not too heavy and he is a cobby type.

I weigh 10st 7. My RI did say he would fill out quite a bit, do you think I would be too heavy for him weighing this much? As I don't want to hurt him, i'm worried now!

Don't worry - you look fine.

I'm 5ft 8" and have a 14.2hh Welsh Cob (also black with white socks, she's the spitting image of yours almost!) and she carts me about just fine.

Don't know where the comment came from that you'd need a bigger horse to 'do schooling', we seem to manage just fine. Jumping is somewhat interesting when you have such long legs but a good saddle helps.

As I said, I have a 15.2 cob and I'm 5ft 8 so I'm not criticising people who ride smaller horses, far from it, I like being a bit nearer the ground

What I was trying to say though is that I personally find it harder to school Daisy than I have in the past on bigger horses because my feet come below her stomach if I ride with longer stirrups as I would to get a deeper seat for dressage. I've had to adapt my riding style to some degree because I'm riding with much shorter stirrups than I have in the past for flatwork. There's no point wearing spurs if you're prodding at air

It all depends on the individual, how they ride, how long their legs are etc but I do think that it can be an issue because it has been for me
