We've recently moved to grass livery and are deciding on whether to get field shelter, stables or combination. I cant decide what would be best and am after experiences or recommendations. Priorities are need to be 3.6x7.2m with overhang. Must be on skids unsure if need metal or would wood be ok? Would like to minimise weather damage issues....would stables with doirs pinned back be better as smaller opening and heavier think ground anchor and storm vents etc too....We dont really plan on stabling in winter mainly just for emergency or for containing one or whilst other ridden etc. Currently thinking maybe one stable and other side open shelter...or would it be better to have seperate? any thoughts?

My friend recently got a combination one, it has 2 doorways and a swinging partition, so it can be open or split into 2 12x12. I would go for this option :)

We have shelters with slip rails on the front and inside as partitions. All of ours have metal skids, the wooden ones will eventually rot, but the biggest one has to be moved by a tractor where the smaller two, 3.6x3.6m and 3.6xabout 5m can easily be moved with the 4x4 even if it's a little wet. We only shut them if we've had veterinary issues to deal with or when restricting grazing. To be mobile, you can't put them on a prepared surface and need to move them. How frequently seems to depend on your area and probably how bothered your neighbours are. I would guess that with full doors and partitions they would be heavier so something to consider if you're planning to move them with a 4x4. We don't move any of them in the winter and chain them to big ground anchors to make sure that they don't blow away! Personally I find the two smaller shelters much easier but mainly because we move them regularly, and put them in different fields, and they don't need the tractor, but this obviously depends on your set up.
Hope some of that helps!

Thanks for replies. I'm inclined to do separate too we don't really plan on moving them but want to be able to if planning complains. Who made yours?

We have two portable shelters on our yard, but they also have a regular sized stable door (top and bottom doors) and then a top to bottom barn door that bolts into the door frame at the top and bottom, meaning they can also be used as stables. We had the first one on a field on metal skids and towed it down to the yard. The stable maker towed it and said the wooden skids it was already on would have been good enough to tow. We had the second one built on the yard and don't have metal
Skids on it, but they're now on concrete, so don't need skids protecting the wood from the ground..
