Hi John,
People go about it in different ways. If you want to compete professionally, the best thing to do (especially if you haven't got a horse of your own) is to go to work at a professional competition yard. It'll be a lot of hard work and you'll go from the ground up, but eventually you will be taking horses out for competitions and you will end up competing other peoples horses.

You could do your A levels first - any, just so you have them - you could go the BHS, NVQ or college route, but these won't end up at the destination you want to head - I think, anyway.

Ask your riding instructor where the competition yards are around you are, and maybe you can start doing a bit of mucking out for them now before you leave school.

Best of luck to you.

John, to be a 'professional rider' you need talent and lot of luck, be in the right place with the right exposure. I would think about applying (when you're old enough) for a working pupil job with a reputable yard, if you want to specialise then go to a yard that does dressage, or SJ or eventing and work hard and get noticed. If you want to be an BHSI or AI then go to college or a dentist or what ever, phone up a few colleges and see what is on offer so you know what GCSE's to sit.

In your previous posts you asked about work in exchange for riding lessons, start this as soon as, IMHO I would try a professional yard if there is one around you, if not a riding school.

I appreciate you are restricted with finances but try saving up, adding it to your Christmas and birthday list but try and get a short break with some one like Tallend Equestrian or Adam Kemps new place (no idea where in the country you are!) these would invaluable to you further down the line.

If you are really hungry for it don't faff with the small time places, get noticed, get with the big names!!!

Hi, having read your previous post on here I have to say I do admire you for your determination. That will come in handy in the horsey world!
I would recommend you study very hard at school, choose a career to go into that really interests you. Then choose your GCSE's and AS levels to follow you into that career. At the same time get plenty of experience at good yards, ride as many different horses as you can (ie work weekends for a dealer or riding school), and soak in as much info as you can. Read all you can. Most of all never give up...

I have a National Diploma in Horse Management which took me two years to complete and i was able to explore lots of different avenues.
I got in on GCSE C's and D's (required=4 x A*-C)

Type equine colleges in google and see what you find!!
