what do i need to take on a student groom?

OK like post says , I'm a yo what do i need ...to take on a student , do i send them to college and pay for the course ? what hours would they work ? and pay whats the going rate ?

i was just thinking id like to take on a young student to help out at my yard but wanted to make sure i could , and whats all the things i have to do , offer etc thanks
any help would be great thanks

Might be an idea to check with your local equine college about placements - they should be able to provide you with all the info you need about insurance, facilities, wages etc. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Contact your local college and see if they have any day release students, we have one currently who comes in for one day a week. We dont pay her but she gets a free lesson and exercises horses as well. Or you could get an NVQ student- your yard would need to be checked up to standard and they normally do a 40hr week but think it can vary according to yard needs. They get £100 a week and have to have at least 2hrs riding a week. Again your local college or council could help with this.

Colleges typically have either full time students (so they aren't available at all) or NVQ students who can go to college one or two days a week (variable).
Other students...from First Diploma up to BSc and beyond have placements as part of their courses...but that would only be for approx 2 months...so by the time you've trained them, they've gone.
Your best bet may be to just employ a graduate or college leaver from NDHM courses (when they are typically 18yrs old by the time they leave).
For any student, phone the college and ask for a reference. Colleges aren't allowed to give bad references...but can refuse to give any...so if you find the tutor won't say the student is punctual, reliable etc, take the hint
