I'm so excited - my friends and I will be sharing a horse after the new year AS LONG AS we work out what we need/cost etc. I just need a bit of help:
-How many turnouts will I need and what weights (the horse will be turned out 10 hours a day)?
-Do I really need a fly rug and a cooler?
-What stable rug weight will we need?
-Should I get an extra layer rug for warmth in cold weather?
-Should I get an earnet aswell as fly fringe?
-Do I really need an exercise sheet?

Thanx x

Fly rug - I have never needed one so only if horse is prone to major irritation
Cooler - I only use one if travelling, but if you don't clip you may need one in winter if sweated up after hacking
Stable rug - I don't bother and keep them in their turnout rug
Extra layer rug - totally dependant on weather conditions and whether clipping horse
Earnet/fly fringe - only ever use a fly mask and most come with ears attached (bear in mind if you use a fringe you will also need to invest in a fieldsafe type headcollar)
Fleece - a good investment as can use as a cooler or under rug so solves the issue of a cooler/under rug!

Hope that helps!

I agree with this, especially with the fly rug.

Horses need different types of rugs depending on age, breed, clip, condition and personality. My TB was in a fleece last night- he gets pretty warm in his standard neck stable rug atm. My old pony would have probably been in a heavyweight stable rug by now. You're best to ask what they are rugging it with now.
