What do people expect to pay for a share nowadays?

I am thinking about offering my pony for 1/2 share. She’s a good all rounder for a small adult or I’d consider a capable child as long as horsey parent was supervising. I’d be interested to know what are people paying/charging for 3 days a week, she’s on part livery in Northants/Leicester border so no yard jobs required. Thanks

What is meant by a half share?
What riding or ground work will the sharer be allowed to do and for how long and on which days. Will they
have the use of a school?

The cost of sharing varies from place to place but sharing needs to be slightly cheaper than what it costs to ride at your local RS. This because an RS ride can be rearranged or cancelled but a sharer pays per month and pays regardless of whether or not they ride or are ill or are away on holiday.

Sharers also need their own insurance whereas RSs are licensed and insured.

I paid the daily livery cost for the days I rode my old share. I rode her in the morning at a time which suited me. No one else rode her on my days. My current share is in the prime of life and needs the exercise. I think she goes out three times a day, 6 days a week. My old RS fsvourite did 4 hours a day hacking in summer.

I am a long term, satisfied weekday sharer. Sharing allows me to hack solo but with the option to have an escort or to ride in the school (at no extra charge) if I feel the horse needs it or if high winds or the weather make hacking dangerous.

If I wanted to, I could afford to buy a horse. The reason I dont have my own is that I fall in love with the horses I share.

I would therefore say that the owner of a share horse has a responsibility not to part from the sharer unless there is ground for complaint and to give the sharer first refusal to buy the horse if it is ever put up for sale.

The sharer would be allowed to do what they wanted within reason, though not hunting. If all they wanted to do was gallop around and jump each session then they wouldn’t be for me but on the days they rode they would have exclusive use and can do a mix of schooling, pole work, ground work, hacking and jumping. I’d want them to treat as their own, caring about their wellbeing eg not cantering on hard ground etc.

Lessons/hack’s around here are average £40 per hour. I wouldn’t want school work over that but long hacks are fine.

I shared a pony a few years ago. The owner had added up every penny she spent on the horse over the year and divided it by 365. That was the daily rate that I paid.

It sounds reasonable. Around here (South-East), sharing averages about £15-20/ride when you break it down. That would be with chores, usually.

Suffolk based, DIY yard, arena and jumps, horses are safe but not plods, there is quite a few people on the yard charging £30pw for 2 days riding. I think the shares has to poo pick on their day too.

OP this is what you need to do, calculate what their livery, shoes etc cost and then divide by the amount of days your offering

I am in Nottinghamshire. I have a sharer for Ollie. I fell out of love with horses a bit when I lost my mare, and also had a lot going on in my personal life.

Sharer pays me £80 a month, and half his foot trims. She treats him as her own. I know she buys him feed, but that is because she is riding him, and he needs feeding more. She also pays half for his saddle checks. As I don’t ride anymore, from my point of view, I wouldn’t need saddle checks.

She helps me more than I help her.

I was very lucky - £10 per day and I also looked after both her horses whenever she needed/helped her out with any other jobs whenever possible. She knew I was a uni student and made life very easy for me, I'll forever be grateful.
I had another brief part-loan where I just paid for a set of shoes every 6 weeks so just over £10 a week! I travelled quite far for that one though so the petrol added up.

I'd say have an amount in your head but if someone's good and needs it lower - I'd be tempted to drop for them.
