What do the coloured envelopes mean?

This may already have been done but I'm not used to this place yet!!

There seem to be lots of different types of envelopes to the left of the thread titles - what do they mean?

i.e. some are open, some are closed, some are red, some are purple?!!

I'm just learning too but I think it is open if you have read it and one colour if you have posted and a different if you haven't!
Ooops, don't think that is right, there is an explanation at the bottom of the page, hot threads etc!!

there's a little key at the bottom of the main screen but doesn't explain purple ones! I don't like change and so sulking! humph! Wheres the damn smileys!!?
