my cob, is so lazy! he ignores the dressage spurs i use and the comb ones. i have moved him out his paddock and in with the rest to get him more grass as he is down to 470kg. he is 15hh. we are training towards our first novice xc and he is not got enough oomph! he is fairly fit but my legs r too tired! any ideas what to feed, spurs to use or anythin else? oh to add he is given equilibrium scoop of and various supplements, joints, flys etc. he is also ridden 6 days a week for minimum of an hour. thanks

i av a hard time stopping my cob from moving lol i would suggest you get him a higer energy feed but wouldn't know what to suggest

Oats work a bit on Daisy but to be honest nothing is going to turn her into a racehorse!

Have you been working on a fitness plan to moniter any changes in your cobs fitness?

You say he is fairly fit? depends what you call fairy fit and what you are doing in that hour that you do six times a week.

How quickly are you expecting him to get fitter? what I mean is are you doing to much and burning him out?

Does he get a sweat on even on cooler days, is he getting too de-hydrated perhaps.

Is he getting enough engery from the quality of grazing he's on along with the hard feed.

Or could it be that your getting tired therefore making his job harder, (which is understandable if he's not listening to your legs).

Is he finding the school work boring?

Are you using your leg aids effectively, are you being too soft or just nagging?

I agree alot of cobs can be lazy creatures but once they are fit and healthy they turn into something else, so there is no reason for him to be like that if you explore possible reason in some depth.

Trust me, D is as fit as can be and is still a laid back little beastie. RI has tried every technique under the sun and it makes only a little difference. Annoying when you want to go like the clappers xc but most of the time it's great having a laid back horse if you accept them for what they are.

Ok fair enough, sounds like he is just a laid back kinda guy then, just thought I'd cover various reasons just in a case, as some people have different ideas of what is fit etc

Have you tried some fast release engery food to see if it perks him up, I've found Allen & Page Sustain along with some Redcell can help give them them a bit more staying power.

Pretty similar to my lad.

Rode in impulse spurs for a while that worked.

I have however just put him on performance concentrate by dodson and horrel.

I think it has made a huge improvment. Has however in my opinion made him slightly edgy, spooky wise. But it has done the energy trick.

Maybe give that a try. It is specially for natives and big warmbloods if i remeber correctly.

I ask, he does! I am lucky in that respect.
I have ridden a lot of lazy cobs and find that riding positively and thinking forwards is far better than feeding high energy food, in my experience it either has little/no effect or they go off their rocker. Try varying your seat position slightly and squeeze to go forward on alternate sides.

my horse can be, um, ploddy. my RI pointed out how much i nag nag nag with my legs. so banned me from nagging. now i ask with my legs once, and carry a schooling whip to follow it up if he ignores it.

works wonders on mine... i didn't need to use the whip after about 3 sessions... until i forget to carry a schooling whip - he's totally sussed me out.

also, with my horse, it's a lot to do with boredom. so we try to keep things fun. if you're riding 6 days a week, are you varying things? perhaps a little holiday for your horsey?
xx

carrot on a stick or a big shock up the back side lol!!! :P JUST KIDDING!!!

i have to say poppys not the fastest but so goes as quick as her wee legs will let her so cant really help there
