I'm thinking of loaning another pony for my daughter and I've seen a lovely one at a rehoming centre. I've spoken to lady who runs the centre and I need to obtain a reference from my vet. Does anyone know what the vet will be looking at when they come to my property? Many thanks x

Does she not mean you just need to get your regular vet to write you a reference? So not really an inspection/home check (do they not do that themselves?) but a general reference that you treat your animals well, pay your bills etc.

Actually paying a vet to come and do some sort of inspection would be a bit cheeky if you ask me. You would have to pay for a call fee and technically the vet would be working for you at that point, not the rescue, which would put him/her in an awkward position.

Thank you maybe I understood it all wrong it makes much more sense the way you explained it. I think my issue maybe I've never had vets out to my horses as never needed it.

I'd expect the rescue place to do the home check.
If they want a reference from your vet, then I'd expect it to be along the lines of "yes, their horses are always in nice condition" but if all they do is come out once or twice a year for teeth and vacs then that doesn't really mean much!

Good luck :)

I just spoke to vet they have a look at premises to make sure they have adequate turnout space safe healthy environment and also make sure I have good knowledge with horses. I feel a little uneasy about being judged but totally understand when rehoming any animal. It costs £80
I think my downfall maybe as I've only owned my own for a year so I'm still learning maybe I'm not experienced enough in their eyes who knows. X

The fact that you already have a horse is a big plus in your favour. I do home checks for a whippet rescue and much prefer homechecking when the perosn already has a dog. All I really need to do is look at their current dog to asses what type of home they will provide. Much harder with people who dont have one already to make a judgement call. I'm sure the vet will feel much the same so as long as your current horse is well and happy you can stop worrying.
