Soooooo we have decided to sell the RR and the old Series 3 Land Rover and buy a towing vehicle and keep my nearly new Ford Focus as a family/comfy car.

So what do you all recon is the best and why........

Thankies....

We have a shogun LWB for the horsey stuff. It easily pulls my two cobs in a IW 510. Its a J reg and still going strong.
We also have a VW Touareg but that isn't allowed near the horses.

Pathetic isn't it, I wouldn't touch anything with rover written on it after being well stung years ago with rover stuff, I hold a grudge for ever when it comes down to principle and wallet.

I wouldn't know what to buy in the nearly new stuff as I havent got the money, but I would start with maybe Nissan and Shogun for starters if I did.
My V reg Terrano 2.7 diesel tows fine.

We have a Merc ML270. with a funny gearbox, i think its called triptronic or tiptronic.
Brilliant for towing, never let us down. Managed to get us on and off show fields that most people were being towed out of by tractors! (at one show everything got towed off except for us and when we got home there was mud on the trailer roof! people were watching the lorries and cars getting towed off and we got a round of applause when we got off the field without assistance.)
soo comfy when your going long distance as well as you dont have to fiddle with gears and its generaly just a comfy car. it doesnt hunt gears on steep hills and takes off with a heavily laden trailer on a steep hill without noticing it.
If you can afford one they are absolutely brilliant for towing

I'm on my 3rd Nissan Terrano, having had two short wheel bases and now a long wheel base and they are brilliant for towing. They are pretty reasonably priced too and drives more car like than other 4WD I've been in. No problem cruising along the motorways and finds the steep Devon hills and lanes a doddle, so would highly recommend one - oh, and I've never had one break down on me either !

We have a Land Rover Discovery and have had trouble with a few of them, mainly the automatic ones, but generally they are good. The Defender tows MUCH smoother though (it's a 90 and as it's shorter than the Discovery it feels a lot more stable) but it's not as comfy for the passengers!
Best ever was my friend's Mitsubishi Shogun Sport, automatic, V8, drank petrol like there was no tomorrow but my god did it tow well.

Pajero 2.8 td short wheelbase. Tows great, but only had it since september and 6 attemps have been made to nick it. I'm sick of repairing the locks, cost a fortune in immobilisers and now alarm. It's actually put me off the car.

Landrover Discovery! Have I got the only good one??!! I love it!! Only use it for towing IW 510 so its low mileage and I've had it for years, use my son's clapped-out Wacky Races Clio for everyday driving.

grand jeep cherokee, towed for the first time yesterday in 20 years and wouldnt have known the trailer was there.

Used to have a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which I thought was OK until I got my 2.7 Diesel Discovery 3 Auto. Utterly brilliant as a towing vehicle as well as anything else we throw at it. Got road tyres on it though (LR don't offer an offroad tyre as original equipment!) but have never been stuck even in fields where everything else is getting towed out: been close though.

BTW.
Brother in law (farmer) is on his 4th Disco and won't look at anything else.

97 Jeep Cherokee 2.5ltr petrol sport.
Best tow car i've ever had (and towed with most of em).
Should have sold it 18 months ago when we got the horsebox but just never seen to get round to it

I kinda like the old girl.
Handles well, built like a tank (mechanically), goes through MOT each year without any issues and not too bad on fuel being a 2.5ltr

Me too!!! I have a LWB and a SWB. Brilliant cars. We're looking to upgrade shortly and it's a toss up between another Terrano or a Patrol as that has a higher tow limit.

2001 RR and really like it. No problems so far and it is confortable to sit in as well. Pulls my Equi-Trek with two horses up hills without any trouble.

Have been looking at all the options and have found reliability faults with just about everything 4x4

I dont want to be swapping one unreliable car for another.

2.7 Terrano seems to come up a lot..... are the ones being driven older or new ones????
