I'm a slob and George rarely gets any coat shines applied. He gets a brush but I rarely use sprays. A lot of it is due to the fact they may aggravate his sweet itch (very mild). He has a natural shine for most of the year and goes dappley in summer. Because he is dark it seems to show up a lot better.

several people have commented on how shiny my horse is - I groom him almost every day with a body brush dipped in water then dragged over the edge of the bucket several times to get most of the water out, every few strokes it gets dipped again - by the end the water in the bucket is filthy and my horse is lovely and shiny. For special occasions a sponge very lightly sprayed with WD40 then wiped in the direction of the coat gives a really nice gleam and stops dust sticking.
