What do you do with a Sec D's mane when showing?

A basic question I suppose, but I've had a lot of conflicting advice with reagrds to my boy's mane in the show ring.

In the following pic, i've pulled it to tidy it au and to plaited it whilst it's wet only taking it out before the class.
The problem is I think it looks a bit fake and loses the natural look that it needs for an M&M's class.

It's not a particularly thick mane so how can I keep the natural look but making him eye catching too?
Id love your comments

the colour of his mane is eye catching itself.. very nice!! what we do is pull it so its nice and shaped... we dont plait because it gets to puffy and a bit too curly.. we just add baby oil or bril cream to it to make it shine and stay glossy!!!! and pull the bottom of his tail too and add baby oil again.

when i had my sec d mare i was told to pull it but just not short leave a bit of length o it, cant see your photo

Can't see the photo but for mine I flip the mane over to the wrong side, use a fine rake to take out some of the bulk and leave a natural edge to it, then flip it back and pull with a metal comb so it's about six inches long.

M&Ms should NEVER be trimmed out but ALL the showing people do these days - sometimes far, far too much. If you need to trim him out, do it so that it looks fairly "natural". Don't use a scissors to bang his tail - pull it gently from the bottom to shorten it so that you do not end up with a straight edge - same with a mane.
