Out of interest. Do you leave them at home? Take them with you? Let them run loose around the yard? Tied up or left in a secured place? What about when you're riding, in the menege or out hacking? Take them with you? Leave them behind? What breed is your dog?

Lots of questions, but am interested to hear how people manage different breeds when it comes to going to the yard. Sadly I don't have a ned at present (haven't had one since July), but still I plan on getting another at some point, when time and finances allow. To fill that huge gap that was left without a horse, I bought myself a puppy. Love her to bits, but I don't know how I would manage her when it comes to getting another horse. Her breed is known for being unreliable off-lead, so I don't know whether having her on a yard would be the best idea?

Any replies welcome.

He usually comes to the yard with me.
He will run loose while I can keep my attention on him but if I'm riding or doing something specific where I can't keep an eye on him he gets shut in either the car boot or in an empty stable.

My yard is at home so he runs around with me,as it is secure!

But when i am riding he has to be put in the house cos he like to chase me

He is a JRT

I've got samoyeds and most horses, including mine, are scared silly of them. They are used to horses and are well-behaved-ish (for sams anyway), so i put it down to the fact that they are very white. Consequently, I usually leave them at home when doing the ponios, with a big bone and the radio on. They are very lovely.

I have 2 border terriers, if I'm busy they sit in their crate in the back of the car with the door open so they can see me (they're very whiney

) and when Jack is riding they watch on leads. I only let them off if I can watch them as Archie likes to chase the cats and Ted eats poo

Mine are with me all the time, even out riding.

It is the only rule I have here though for my Boarders, absolutely no dogs. My own dogs would be highly upset and I almost got sued by a Boarder when one of my cats attacked her stupid, yappy JRT (no offence to any other JRTs), it shouldn't have chased her in the first place.

I have a variety of different breeds....they all come to my stables when I go...I have my own place not on a livery...so I can please myself....and my dogs are all used to horses...well..they have no choice really

so all very well behaved...they all just run around whilst Im busy....except my rotti...who spends her time searching for the chickens eggs

Mine's let loose at livery yard (we have 600 acres) and if i am riding via roads he's crated in the tack room (i keep spare crate in there) If i am long reining/riding on tracks he comes with me. My boarders is often let loose while i muck out and my attention on them but stays in the car at other times.

I sometimes take mine with me, I let them run loose - so long as our dogs get on with the farm dogs we're allowed to. I have 3 Jack Russells and 2 Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas, I haven't taken all 5 down yet, have taken 3 though. They come riding with me if I'm not going on the roads. Mouse (my middle JRT) tries to race my horse, if we canter she flies as fast as poss it's funny to watch

Mine come with but my horse is at my mums yard so they can run around and do what they want - which is generally causing mischief along with my mum 3 dogs!

My dad has got a pet pigeon

, who sits up on a beam in the hay barn. Alfie (the border terrier) has taken to climbing up on the beam and and walking along to try and eat the pigeon (which is all good except it sits on the next beam up) then he can't turn around and it's too high to jump so he has to sit there crying until he gets rescued!

Mine comes with me at the moment as I'm not riding and she was in the accident with me, so needs lots of tlc
smile.gif
She's a runner, so stays on an extending lead or she does a forest gump
grin.gif
when I lung she sits beside the school and supervises

Mine comes to the yard and mooches round while I muck out (or poo pick in the field in summer) and then she goes to lie in the car, sulking, while I work the horse - used to let her stay out, but she tries to run round the arena after me and pony doesn't like it...

then I take her for a walk - takes forever. One day, I'll have a dog that self-walks....

I've got a greyhound and a lurcher - they come to the yard with me sometimes, but always stay in the car unless I can have them on leads, otherwise they try and chase/murder the cats, chickens, ducks etc

The lurcher has also been known to chase a horse around its paddock (luckily the horse was mine...)

There are loads of dogs at our yard - YOs, and those belonging to other liveries - although I am a dog lover I hate it, as there is always dog s**t absolutely everywhere, it is gross

My horses are kept at home so the dog is always with me. I do chain him up though as he has a tendancy to pig-out on poo and various other yucky things

He also wanders off if other dog walkers pass by. He is good off the lead though if I am around to keep an eye on him.

I have had many liveries who bring their dogs with them, have to say, I wouldn't allow it anymore though - unless the dog got on very well with mine.

Oh, and he's a Ridgeback

My yard is at home so mine just runs around and keeps busy. She comes riding with me because we live on a 2,000 acre estate (not ours I hasten to add - I wish!!) and she is very good and doesn't run off. However, I did manage to gallop over the top of her 3 weeks ago resulting in a very expensive vet's trip and her in a bandage for 3 weeks. Not her fault - more mine and lack of brakes!!

Two of mine are fine to run round while I'm doing yard work. They love to come and help bring the horses in and try to steal food from the cat. They are a bit fearless around the horses and I worry they will get kicked, just pray it'll be the shoeless sec A, and it might make them more cautious. The also eat poo which is gross.
Can't take them if I'm going to ride as wouldn't dare leave them at the yard in case they are nicked.
3rd, old granny dog is a pain gets really excited & would love to kill the cat. Tend not to take her & would never dare let her run free.
They are all English Bull Terriers.

When I had my horse, I'd take my 2 lurchers down with me, they used to just ignore the horses and go poo-eating while I rode/lunged etc. But used to leave them at home if I was hacking. I have a young Whippet now, and he is just a nightmare when he's loose near horses, wants to chase them all the time, but on a lead he's great near them. He's even stood quietly watching a newborn, I think he was too fascinated to move! I think a part of him knew it was 'quiet time'

We've got two lurchers. One stays with my OH and the other spends the day with me. I keep my horse on my mum's yard with only her horse and my sisters so my dogs are allowed to be loose. They tend to potter about while i do stables etc (although one is a cat chaser so we have to make sure they are in the house). When i ride in the school i put them in the car, if i'm planning a hack i will generally leave them with my OH. Can't leave them loose while riding as they think it's a great game and try to play in the school!

Have a JRT and he comes to the yard (small private yard) with me most of the time, apart from if I'm hacking out. When I ride he either gets put in one of the stables with all the necessary items he needs, or OH will take him for a walk around the fields, along with the yard dogs. If I havk out he is left at home until I am back and then either my mum will drop him down to me or I go home have lunch and then take him back with me.......

My rotti comes with me everyday and loves pottering around the yard. When I ride she is either left in stable or car. I have a whippet pup and when she is well trained enough she will be introduced to the horses. I feel bad leaving her out, but cant risk an accident and am getting all the training in place first as it was life saving with my rotti.

My horses are so used to dogs being about and everyone seems to get on well, however I would never allow a friend to bring an unfamilar dog down the yard, that does not know how to behave around horses as I think it may get kicked.

YO's son is terrified of dogs so they must be ALL be kept on leads or in cars whilst on the yard & immediate surroundings. i dont tend to take my puppy up very often as its abit awkard just leaving her in the travel crate or in the stable, she just whimpers. when we do take them up (both dogs) we leave them together in the stable but we take them up when they come out with me on a ride (dad on foot).

1 dog is an 8y/o labXrotti quiet mongrel 'thing', the other is a 6mth old JRT

Thanks all, very interesting. The problem I have is my girl is only 4 1/2 months old. She is left on her own during the day anyway (unavoidable, I'm afraid, hence why I chose an independant breed), so it is really not fair to leave her alone during the afternoon/evening too.

Looks like the horses will have to wait for a while.
