I am trying to get an idea of the range of jobs available. What jobs with horses are out there? So my question is, what do you do?

thanks MId,

Equine nutritionist? How did they train for that?
Instructor - not my thing (don't like kids and don't have patience!)
Tack and saddle fitter - thats an apprenticeship so i am too old
frown.gif

Groom - too old, too fat, too lazy

Vet - already been studying for 8 years and don't have the £15K a year for the fees

Any idea how they became a nutritionist and is there much work out there for theM

Again, thanks for your reply!

I think equine nutritionists generally go for equine science degrees with some form of specialisation in them.

The problem is, there arent a whole lot of job openings in this area as they're usually employed by the large feed manufacturers... which, as you can imagine, results in only a limited number of positions being available.

I think nutritionists have to have an Equine Science Degree (well that is what they seem to want). What about a sales job within the equine industry i.e sales rep for feed or clothing or advertising?

thanks samp - brilliant idea. I am not sure if there are any openings for that kind of thing here in ireland. I have never seen anything like that advertised.

I was thinking equine dentistry but I think i could be a bit too squeemish plus to get properly qualified you are talking apprenticeship and then the exams.

i was thinking of doing a distance learning course along side my PhD in equine science but can only do that to diploma level and doing the business modules but have no idea what i would be qualified to do! really expensive as well....

could do a one year masters in equine science as well in edinburgh but again not sure how much closer that would get me to what i want to do!!!!

Thanks but I work in labs at the moment and I am looking to get away from lab work. I have worked in vet research and one lab is pretty much the same as the next. Looking for something different!

Ex vet nurse here ~ you can do a top up year of equine vet nursing ~ its very interesting if you have a great vet to work with.

But its mostly cold, hard work in crappy conditions ~ but oh so rewarding ~ which it has to be as the pay is pants!

I'm a health and safety inspector!!

********Ducks to avoid the blows**********

I do apply common sense though! I also inspect and license all the animal establishments in our area - i.e. riding schools, dog kennels, pet shops and zoos

My uncle is an Equine Dentist.
My cousin is a Farrier.
My aunt is chairman of 'The Great Westers Harness Club'.
My other aunt runs A.F.A.C.E (American Foundation Against Cruilty of Equines).
My dad used to be a p2p jockey.
My mum does everything.
And i'm a work rider in a racing yard in the mornings, and try my hand at eventing in the afternoons!
