So many things to choose from- veg oil, codliver oil, linseed oil, micronised linseed, outshine- *head pop*. I feed balancer and chop at the moment, but what is good for shine, not too pricey, and doesn't bang a load of extra calories in?!

I like soya oil :) But tbh this was more for Charisma's weight - to add calories without bulk. She looked good on it though!

Oh and giving the horse an odd brush now and again ;)

I think my mare is a pretty good advert for a good old cheap glug of sunflower oil :p

Which feed shop sells grooming? :p I just noticed all these feeds that seemed to promote a shiney coat, and wondered if there was any truth in it or if just good grooming would do it

Ah, mine is a good doer :( That's what I'm a bit worried about

wow! Eye shine :) Stunning

When I used to show many, many years ago (back in the Dark Ages :p) I fed my bright bay linseed to give his coat a richer colour and shine. Also added about 1/4 to half a cup of peanut oil to his feed which was also great for a very shiny coat, mane and tail. Need to be careful though as it can be heating.
Also, and this might seem a bit strange but on the morning of the show I would fill a bucket with warm water, add a small capful of kerosene and then using a soft cloth that was wrung out, rub it all over his coat. He absolutely gleamed.
Also mixed a raw egg into his feed about once a month.
We always won our turnout classes as his coat was shiny to the point of dazzling.

Brilliant, thanks for these ideas :)

Nobody seems to stock elbow grease anymore. That and micronised linseed.
OP see 'Charnwood milling' website.

Oilovite is one of the cheaper ones. I buy 10kg tubs (last a long time) off Viovet (internet) for £46 I think, no P&P. I remember it saved me £15 off shop prices.. I feed 4ozs a day to a 15.3/16hh 6 year old. It has a long shelf life so buying bulk pays off. You can buy 1kg tubs but it works out dearer.

Micronised linseed..very cheap and good old elbow grease. My boy is shining already and has skipped the whole scurry coat episode.
