I have been banned from feeding Jerry anything other than Hifi and hay as he was such a nutter lol but I have noticed he is beginning to look a little lean now, not too bad, but don't want him to get any leaner. I need some ideas on what to feed him that will not send him bananas

I have tried him on calm and condition in the past (loopy) and sugerbeet (well unmolassed speedibeet) sent him hyper too.

I was thinking of just changing the hifi to Alfa A, and see how he does on that. He is on ad-lib hay, but wondered whether a bit of haylage might help.

Would be great to hear your thoughts and experiences on feeding a nutter, he is in work, lives in at night out all day.

Thanks

What about top spec feed balancer alone with afalfa a oil ? then add more soya oil on top. Fed it to a TB that couldnt eat starch. He looked great on it.
Or you could get something called RELEVE from Saracen but that is expenisve...but that is very low starch. Its the starch that makes horses like this nutty.
Also you can get low energy grass nuts from simple systems...

Id use Alfa A Oil worked on my nutter who only gets that and half a scoop of plain boring nuts !!!

how about that new feed - SImple Feeds or something ???

I'm not a big fan of feeding too much to youngsters. They don't need the energy and they get too sharp!

My 4 year has good quality hay - pretty much ad lib - he was on haylage but I had to stop that!!

He also gets about 1/2 scoop Hi Fi and 1/3- 1/2 scoop Ride and Relax morning and night. Not much!! He looks really well but if his condition changes so will his diet.

I feed TopSpec cool condition cubes and the balancer together with alfa a - had him on sugar beet but stopped as seemed to make him batty but might have been coincidence?

Does the Alfa Oil not jazz them up? It used to send Hector wild

Top spec balancer is a good idea, he currently just has a vit and min supp.

Can do with some, not with others! I think with all feeds its a question of trial and error..

Solo is a transformed horse since i cut out the speedibeet and pasture mix.
He now lives on 1 1/2 scoops Hi-Fi Lite, 1 scoop Baileys Economy nuts and 1/2 scoop of Baileys no.1.
He gets ad-lib hay at night (he's in at night) and then 1/2 a scoop of nuts in the morning.
He is ridden about 4 times a week and i try to lunge him once a week.
He's stopped his box-walking, is much easier to ride in the school and is a much nicer horse to hack out!
Dunno if thats any help to you but thats whats worked for me!

well some of ours it did and some different sounds like it would with your boy !!! jusdt stick to Alfa A !!

I tried to change my boy onto Baileys No 4 sent him loopy went back to my plain pony nut !!!

The simple System feeds do look good though x

I feed good old Economy Mix! Osc gets a scoop of hifi and econ mix twice a day in summer and 3 times a day in winter. He is prone to getting a bit silly on feed but needs a fair amount to keep his weight on as he isn't a good doer. Ever since i tried this he's been great on it!

I feed Arch Anti-Lam which is a high yeast feed for laminitic ponies, but Arch has it coz of his runny poo's!

But it does keep him calm aswell, he has that and Baminton herbal chaff, he also has Blue Chip Karma, pink power and garlic. All that has worked a treat and he's stopppd trying to kill me now!

My loony is on Alpha A and ultimate balance. I add Soya oil over the winter to keep condition on. It's cheap (from Tesco) doesnt fizz him up like mixes or nuts and he's coat looks great!

I use simple system, I think they are based in Suffolk - I use unmollassed sugar beet, lucerne nuts and either ruff stuff or lucy stalks chaff. I use their total eclipse for a feedbalancer Works well for my mare who would fizz up on feeds with cereals or mollasses. I also use it for my two fatties and a young TB. They also do loads of other nuts, bix and cops with no cerelas or mollasses with no added ingredients. Would never change now - try googling it

I have B on Bailey's meadow sweet (abt one third the recommended amount LOL) and Dengie hifi. She was OK on Baileys economy nuts but she doesn't need them at the mo. I top it up with Feedmarks benevit and garlic. And hay of course

Simple Systems Luciebix, Saracen ReLeve, Feedmark Benevit. Ad-lib hay too, he's never in the stable without hay in front of him.

I wouldn't go for the haylage, maybe try a little but its pretty heating.

A bit of oil maybe? Just corn or rape oil?

Chaff varies such a huge amount, some will heat some won't so much. D &H have a new chaff which is pretty low carb, but it may have some molases in, you could phone them and ask abotu it i guess if he is really losing cond.

Does he look bad enough to do anything just yet? Prob best to go on the old saying

"if it aint broke don't fix it!"

I think I will try him on Alfa A (not brave enough to try Alfa oil yet

) and the top spec, see how he goes, Thanks everyone for the advice

If you find he is still loopy on the standard Top Spec, try their new Leisure Time. My potentially loopy horse does very well on it and I just add a bit of extra biotin as the Leisure Time contains a bit below the RDA.

What breed is Jerry? I have a TB X who is high on life. When I got him he was really calm but they had him out 24 hours and no hard feed. I have him partially stabled and tried a few things. Started with Ride and Relax, then tried Baileys lo Cal and now have D&H Leisure Mix. He is fine on this, still lively but not nutty. I mix it with Hi Fi good doer, garlic & cortaflex supplements and carrots with ad lib hay. Loads of people comment on how well he looks and he does indeed have a shiny coat and good condition (despite minimum grooming from his lazy mum !!!). I tried to move him up the next level of mix but went loopy so settled on the leisure mix and won't be changing again !

i feed my loopy headcase who is a poor doer top spec ballencer with their cool and calm nuts and i have a very chilled out mare as they are barley free (she has an allegy to barley) I spoke to the top spec people at YHL and they said calm and condition was barley free but has pretty much every other ceral in it!(not my pov just what i was told) I feed this to her with Alfa A plus Oil and Speedi beet. Hope this helps! Nutters are so hard to feed!!
