Hi guys,

What does everyone feed their oldies, and what would you recommend? My share horse is 20 and has no hard feed, and is out on grass 24 hours a day - although he seems to enjoy his work, and obviously they slow down as they get older - but we lack oomph and energy alot of the time. I've never had to feed an older horse before and want to get it right.

Thanks :)

in the summer my mare of 24 just has L-mix and some supplements to help her joints and then in winter she has hifi original and old faithful mix and then garlic, oil, no bute, and the same joint supplement :) she dunt have much as she gets fat off fresh air - shes the only horse at my yard that manages to come out of the winter fatter than went she went in haha x

at the mo nothing as he is on good grazing looking a little too well on it.....:eek: but in winter I feed Bailey's lo-cal. Hi-fi Senior is a good chaff for the oldies.

Just make sure he has plenty of fibre that he can manage. The oldies here have Allen & Page Fast Fibre, Speedibeet, Allen & PAge Quiet Cubes in winter (contain linseed), Mollichaff Veteran and Equi Jewel. The combination of the above basically depends on how old they are (the oldest here was 40) and how they hold their condition.

14.1 26yr tbX in gentle work 4 times a week ish, out 24/7 on good grazing

am and pm, 2/3rds scoop build up cubes, 1/2 scoop sugar beet.
daily,1 scoop veteran supp, 1 scoop vetvits for arthritits.

In winter as teeth trouble, will have bowl of fast fibre twice a day to replace forage. Ad lib haylage/soaked hay though I think he struggles. Will add extra feed luchtime in winter if weight dropped also needs rugging well.
Not the type to 'hot up' BTW.
