Just wondering as I constantly worry if I'm feeding correctly.

I am using 1 scoop Molichaff showshine, cup of fast fibre and 1/2 scoop spillars senior maintenance mix with a glug of linseed oil for my 18 yo good doer warmblood. He came to me 2 months ago on the above but with more spillers and no fast fibre.

Is your horse in the correct condition, with a good coat, the correct amount of energy for his work and seemingly bright and happy with no other problems? If so, it sounds like his diet is right for him! What else do you feed him apart from bucket feed - ie grazing, hay/haylage as this is actually the most important part of the diet!

If you wanted to feed strictly by the text book then you could add a vit/min supplement at a reduced rate, as you are not feeding the Fast Fibre or the Spillers Mix at anyway near the recommended rate. However, if he looks well and is on good grazing or adlib good quality haylage then I wouldn't worry too much as he will get a lot of micronutrients from that.

Meant to add, to answer the question in the title, my veteran is on adlib good quality meadow grass haylage, sparse grazing and oats mixed with sugar beet! That diet suits her (and my pocket) but would not necessarily suit others!

My old share pony got half scoop cool mix in both summer and winter. During winter she gets a slice hay in evenings. Cortaflex was added to her feed. She was 29 and a very good doer!

I wouldn't consider 18 to be a veteran!

My sisters horse is 18 and get sugarbeet, alfa A, a small amount of basic course mix, linseed oil, topspec joint supplement and farriers formula. He also get plenty of hay.

Our older horse (25 yo TB) gets sugarbeet, alfa a, coarse mix and linseed oil. Old pony (24) gets sugarbeet, coarse mix and graze on - the latter to slow his eating down! They both get hay too, and are out 24/7.

If your horse is well in himself then I woudl leave it as it is, but you could always add a joint supplement if you feel the need.

He is in really good condition - most shiney horse with a winter coat. He has good grazing and lives out the majority of the time - when he does come in he has access to ad lib meadow hay. Will start putting hay out in the field soon but at the moment there is still a lot of grass. What vitamin supplement would you recommend?

As he does more work (is currently just being walked out and lunged due to a sore back) I will up the feed a little depending on his condition.

Its really interesting to see what other people are feeding their 'oldies'.

Benevit or Spiller's Equivite are both good all-purpose vit/min supplements, but to be honest, he sounds like he doesn't really need it from your description!

my lad gets 1/4 scoop of (dry weight) fast fibre and 1/2 a scoop of hifi twice a day along with 16lbs of haylage at night. he is also a good doer but he is a TB

Total per day split into 2 feeds is:

4 scoops of Alphalfa A
2 scoops build up/sixteen plus ( depending if shop has sold out of one or other

)
2 sccoops sugar beet
2 scoops barley rings.

Anyone any ideas on a weight gaining diet that is not costing me nearly £100 per month

it's worked on putting topline on as much as weight its brilliant only feed a 1/3 scoop once a day.. Bag lasts about a month for one horse and its £40 a bag but it really does work..

My 21 yo gets one feed at night which consists of roughly a small scoop of Mollichaff hoofkind and a small scoop of Hifi Lite with Formula 4 feet and Vitex 4 Equids for supplementation. He gets plenty of good quality hay too, and because he has had laminitis in the past couple of years i daren't give him anything else. He looks and feels very well on it though!!

I've got a 29 year old who lives out, she gets a double handful of Alpha A, with either sugar beet or boiled barley & linseed with Benevit Advance vitamins.
This suits her as she looks very well, I've had people asking me what I feed as she looks so good.

adlib hayledge, and 2 feeds consisting of:

sugarbeet, chaff, build up mix, with some apples/carrots.

I also feed the following supplimets:
